Im pretty sure its going to be like Left 4 dead except in this one, there are no guns. You have to use improvised melee weapons...
And instead of different maps, you are on an island thats an "open world" environment.

Dead Island will focus primarily on melee combat, with firearms and ammo being extremely scarce. Players assume the role of an "everyday" character who was on the island of Banoi for vacation when a zombie outbreak suddenly hits. The player characters find themselves immune to the disease and soon they begin their quest to discover what exactly happened.
I use the word quest, because the game is said to play a bit like an Action/RPG in an open world - Fallout 3 comes to mind in terms of the style we'll be seeing. Players will earn quests from some of the random survivors scattered throughout the island to progress the story. Since you are a normal person - swinging an axe to lop the head of the undead off isn't exactly second nature, so you'll be a bit sloppy at first. The game's skill tree and experience system comes to play here as you can upgrade your proficiency and skills for the games many different objects - anything from an axe to a bat or even a tree branch can be used as a weapon. Furthermore, these items can be used in combination with a weapon customization system - think Dead Rising 2 - to add even more depth.
Dead Island is also boasting a damage system that lets you dismember the zombies anyway you see fit - something we saw in great detail in yesterday's teaser video.
All of this is combined with the promised drop in and drop out four player co-op online gameplay on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Dead Island is sounding incredibly ambitious and if Techland manages to pull it of, they have a sure fire hit on their hands. For now we'll just have to drool over the new screenshots and hope the game makes its planned late 2011 release date.
Here's some screenshots...

Screenshots make me think more of Dead Rising than L4D.
deez look cooked if u ask me. Tesselation is wai ova 64 on some of them and the pipeline in dx11 is limited to 64. Ofc they could subdivide easily pre-gpu but dat just not good cuz they b in dat main bus heavily.
Other then dat it look ok.
Absolutely agreed. Looks very interesting. That trailer is actually very sad and kind of tough to watch.
I hope it some indication of the story or an indication of how their is more of a human element to the story/gameplay.
We all sort of fantasize about a zombie apocalypse as cool or fun, which it probably would be for a little while if all you had to worry about was yourself, but if you had a family...
Wow. You weren't in' kidding. That was prolly the saddest game trailer I've ever seen. The melancholy piano number made it even worse.
Can't wait to play it...
buh...ser...whah....no...shi..
That vid reminds me of that Family Guy episode where Brian finds out he has a son. "Hey, Brian. What would you do if _____ fell out of a window?" "Ooooooooh my god. Oh my god. Oh my gooood. No. Oooooh god. Knock on wood, knock on wood, knock on wood. Ooooooh my god."
Crazy but good video. Already watched it a few times. I don't know if I can handle hearing somber piano scores throughout the whole game and even more somber chords when things get heated with zombies all around you. I don't wanna be sad throughout the whole game. Plus it's not realistic to me. If a real zombie outbreak happened, yeah we would be sad and scared at first but maybe after killing 20 zombies, my family and I would become hardened and will possibly make sport of it.
Sure, but, at least from that vid alone, it's hard to tell if that family had been "in it" for a while, or if everything just started...
True. Either way, game looks great. Looking forward to it.
why are people in general so obssesed with survival horror? I frankly can't understand that.
Who's being obsessed? We're all just agreeing that this game looks good and may be a great game to play.
What was so good about that trailer?
Oblviusly not an undead/zombie horror film fan.
That trailer hits the mark on just how crazy and horrific it would be if some like that happened.
Perhaps some people couldnt grasp what was going on in the launch trailer...
Here is the Origional video played in reverse.
now, I dont have a family, but I can see how that guy in that other video above could choke up with a daughter around the same age. I have a friend that has a 4yr old daughter, Im her god-father, and I would give anything for her....
To be faced with that situation would be terrifying at the very least, And thats not even my own kid. I couldnt even imagine what a parent would feel in that situation.....

stay in character, tbh, imo, tifwiw
Wonderfully well made trailer. Hope the game is as good as it sounds and looks so far.
For you, it would be the underage girl with no law enforcement on the island.
Will support simply because I loved Call of Juarez 1 by Techland. Game never got love here in the states. I'm also a sucker for open-world.![]()
