I have an old Dell PC that I want to get large amounts of files backed up on, so I can get rid of the PC.
I want to store these files (mp3's, pictures, do ents, porn, etc) onto an external hard drive that I use to back up all my stuff with.
I've heard that if certain viruses get on externals, they can become non-functional and I want to avoid all that.
How do I prevent the external hard drive from being corrupted with any potential viruses? This PC is old, so the virusware I have on it is probably dated....It hasn't been hooked up to the internet or anything for years.
Can I put the files onto the hard drive, then hook the hard drive up to my newer computer and scan the files for viruses using my AVG Security Free software?
Or what can I do to avoid putting viruses on my external.
Any help yall can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Simple. Don't put infected files on the external hard drive.
Sorry. Had to do it. If you're antivirus software is dated, update it or use a better antivirus program. Avast is a good free program. Scan the files you want to back up before backing them up. If those files are good, then you're probably good to go.
The tricky thing is if you download straight from the interwebs to your external. That's a riskier move. That's why I don't.
The problem is, the computer is so damn old and messing up on me that it won't connect to the internet. It only has a manual wire connection, and it just won't work when I try to connect. So I can't update the Avast or other software that was on it back in 2006.
Then download a recent and effective antivirus like Antivir (probably the best free one), put it on a USB key, install it on the old one, scan, remove infected files.
If you want more security after the scan, you should use a linux LiveCD as the KDE live CD from Opensuse (you just have to burn the ISO image on a CD, insert it in the CDROM drive of your old machine and start it, no need to install anything, everything runs on the CD). Then copy your files.
Cool.....duh, it all sounds so simple now.
How would you rate AVG free version?
Not as good as antivir. Usually Antivir and Avast are touted as the best free AVs il almost all the different reviews, but I hate Avast cause of the post update screaming voice.

Yes, Antiviruses will fight over viruses and you'll see conflicts. Not to mention that they will use more process cycles.
I'm running Avira (AntiVir) in my new rig and it's very solid.

Use a sandbox tool for all for your browser/downloads and u can go bukkake witout worries. Dat da maximum theoretical protection u can get.
