My (white) mom could make better Mexican food than a lot of the Mexican ladies she learned from....
I identify with about 97% of that list....![]()

How about Griffs Burgers In the Southside and who can forget Solo Serve
Aww man, that brings back memories. I loved First Mate, then they got busted for false advertising, selling whale and saying it was fish.
I do remember Burger Chef...hmm, the "works".
I really don't remember whopper burger and puffin billy's that well.
But I remember Shakeys Pizza though...anyone remember Ole Toro?
You said it! I can relate to about 90% of that list. I can see a lot of the same rules apply to the entire Southwest, like learning how to make Mexican food. My mom never did learn, so I would just eat at all of my friends' houses as a kid. (Thankfully, my wife is a master at making Mexican food!) I lived in Universal City and remember stores like Woolco and Handy Dan in the area, along with "Lone Star" convenience stores. Does SA still have those? There was also a drive-in nearby, where I saw the original Star Wars movie back in 1977.
Damn, I'm getting old.![]()
Which drive-in? There was the Judson-4 in Live Oak and The Starlight in Schertz!!! My first job was at Woolco iin UC!! I'm still in UC![]()
Atleast we still have Bun'N"Barrel and Pigstand.
I grew up across San Pedro (before it was McAllister Fwy) from the San Pedro drive inn.
Heading to Pappy's and drinking beer in the BAC parking lot on weekends.
The ponds (now hole #3 at Silverhorn)
Fargo's Pizza (I used to deliver for them)
Encino Park being way the out of town.
The circles (now Stone Oak)
The cliffs at Vista Del Norte.
Texas dancehall.
TG&Y
Flakey Leonards
That pizza joint in Central Park Mall (I can't remember the name)
