Good hire for tech.
Looks like it's all but official.

No hard feelings, I'll send him a nice bottle of scotch.
Good hire for tech.
He fell pretty hard at Kentucky, but he's done well with the second & third tier programs.
It's worth a shot as long as he doesn't come with too much other baggage.
He would have done alright at Kentucky in time, but those inbred bas s have higher standards for the basketball team than for anything else in their backwoods existence. Tubby Smith had them in the tourney every year, won a le in 1998 (granted with Pitino's players) and had several other quality runs and he still got crucified.
If Calipari's homerun or strikeout approach to recruiting/coaching doesn't net a Final 4 in the next two years (this year or next year), he's gonna feel the heat as well.
Good hire by Tech.
I don't know. Gillispie wasn't recruiting very well there. I don't think they were going to be winning all that much with his guys.
It usually takes a year or two to be the draw. Unless you're Calipari with your World Wide Wes connections, very few new coaches go to a program (even a legendary program) without a transition period.
Also, Gillespie is more of a coach than recruiter, which means needed time to teach 'em up. He can recruit, however.
He would have worked out well enough, but well enough isn't enough for Kentucky. I don't necessarily fault them for their lofty standards. As a 20-year fan of Arizona, I myself have lofty standards. However, I knew when Arizona missed the tournament last year that it was the first year of a four-year process. You should always give a full recruiting class minimum. Four years. That allows time enough to graduate previous coaches players and bring in/teach up your own.
With Arizona, Miller swung and missed almost entirely on players from 2010. They finished in the top-3 of McD's AAs Josh Selby, Ray McCallum and Doran Lamb. They had a 4-star big decommit and go to Vanderbilt (Rod Odom, which hurt) and some of the players Miller did bring in were brought in primarily to fill out the roster/add some talent, not because they fit his system. It was tough going. However, the break through was made for recruiting class three (which Gillespie never got at Kentucky) and now Arizona has a top-5 recruiting class in the nation for 2011, and is in great shape to land a top-3 class in 2012. I think had Gillespie been given 4 years they'd be in good shape. For all the bluster his classes bring, Cal isn't that great a coach that I expect LES. Maybe a random Final 4 here and there, but mostly Sweet 16s and the occasional Elite 8. In 4 years, I expect Gillespie to be a Sweet 16-type coach again.
Gillespie is legit if he can get his act together off the court. He knows what he is doing. I hate this hire.
finally.
now we can see a somewhat compe ive product on the floor. It just sucks I wasted 3 out of my 4 years at this school with Pat ing Knight.
Part of it is because it's an excuse to drink, but I've gone to almost every home game in the last 3 years
Every time I tried to watch a tech basketball game the last 3 years I ended up turning it off half way through and cursing pat knight. About the only quality win I can remember watching them get was against a ranked Washington team that still had pondexter. I'm excited about this hire and I'm hoping in a couple if years we can get the program turned around and actually make the tournament.
I got to see the good years of tech basketball with darvinham, jason sasser and such....but I also had to suffer most of my time up there with zebbie lethridge at quarterback.
Id trade you sports eras

And now it's official.
can't really complain, tbh since i atleast had the Harrell/Crabtree final season to see my freshman year. #2 ranking until the 2nd to last week of the season where they layed a monumental turd at OU.
Sadly, that's the best you could hope for out of a major sport team from Tech![]()
billy is a fun coach and a good one too. he will do very well at tech (unfortunately). good hire for tech.
Lots of time to hang out and drink in lummock; good fit.
