Western Conference quarterfinals matchup: No. 1 San Antonio Spurs vs. No. 8 Memphis Grizzlies
    Sean Deveney
    Sporting News

...Outlook: The Spurs would have had a tough fight on their hands even before Ginobili hurt his elbow. The Grizzlies appeared to tank the final two games in order to force a matchup with the Spurs, so they must feel they have a shot against San Antonio. Hard to disagree—but ultimately, the Spurs know how to win in the playoffs. Spurs in seven.

I say memphis. I thought I'd rather the Spurs play n.o. but those have heart and would have given it their all. Obviously memphis is a bunch of pussies what kind of pride do you have if you lose on purpose to avoid playing another team. So all we have to do now is show them they chose wrong and they will fold up!

NBA Playoff Preview: San Antonio vs. Memphis
    Kurt Helin

    ...OUTLOOK

Inside/outside. Which team can do a better job of taking away the other’s strength? Memphis wants to pound the ball down low — with Randolph they have one of the best low-post scorers in the league, his counterpart Marc Gasol provides another 11.7 points per game (and he has a midrange game you have to respect as well). The Spurs will counter with Tim Duncan, who is no longer the best defensive big man in the league, but he’s not bad, and the physical play of DeJuan Blair and McDyess. Tiago Splitter, who played much better at the end of the season, also will get key minutes.

On the flip side, the Spurs make a league-best 39.7 percent of the threes they take (about 21 a game) and the Grizzlies are not good at defending the three (opponents hit 36.9 percent, 24th best in the league). The Spurs generate a lot of their offense off the pick-and-roll with the ball in the hands of Ginobili and Parker, either with them driving or then kicking out for spot-up looks (almost 25 percent of the Spurs offense is spot-up looks, often those discussed threes). Tony Allen and Shane Battier need to be keys to defending those plays. Memphis has not been great this season at defending the pick-and-roll or closing out on spot-up shooters this season but they have to if they want to advance.

The real key to this series could be depth — San Antonio gets a lot out of George Hill, Gary Neal and Bair off the bench. Can O.J. Mayo match them?

    PREDICTION

Memphis is about as tough a 1 vs. 8 matchup as we can recall. They have real strengths inside and are going to be a physical team that will leave bumps and bruises on whoever they face. The Spurs big men are going to have to work hard all series to both defend and secure rebounds.

But in the end, what the Spurs like to do on offense the Grizzlies don’t defend well, and without Rudy Gay the Grizzlies lack the scoring on the wings they really need to compete.

    Spurs in 6.

San Antonio Spurs (61-21) vs. Memphis Grizzlies (46-36)

I'll be watching to see if Zach Randolph, Marc Gasol, Darrell Arthur and the rest of the Grizzlies frontcourt rotation is ready to go toe-to-toe with the Spurs' veteran group led by Tim Duncan, Antonio McDyess and youngsters DeJuan Blair and Tiago Splitter. Randolph has played like an All-Star since joining the Grizzlies and quietly had a fantastic finish to the regular season. Gasol is as physical as any center the Spurs will face in the playoffs and Arthur really came into his own. If nothing else, their length, athleticism and Randolph's craftiness as a scorer should make things very interesting for the Spurs.

Most telling stat: The Spurs had the second most efficient offense in the league, scoring 109.4 points per 100 possessions. These are not the defense-first Spurs that you've known for the last 14 years. In fact, the Grizzlies were better defensively, ranking eighth on that end, allowing just 102.4 points per 100 possessions.

How this (probably) should go: The Grizzlies are still on the hunt for their first playoff win since moving to Memphis. Pau Gasol couldn't get one when he was with the franchise, but baby brother might one up him this time around. The Spurs don't have anything to worry about, not even with Manu Ginobili's hyperextended elbow a legitimate concern (the MRI is coming Thursday). They'll cruise into the conference semifinals. Spurs in five.

Actually is a sign of disrespect towards the Spurs team.

They think they can beat Spurs in a series. Memphis is way over confident and that's what's going to do them in.

Spurs will look to sweep this got team.

Reality will hit Memphis hard when they realized they're way over their head.

That is exactly why they're gonna lose badly.

They just gave the Spurs reason to them up by disrespecting them and thinking they can beat Spurs.

    The rest of Duncan's quote.

...The Spurs move on to a first-round playoff series against the Memphis Grizzlies, a team that seemed to want to face San Antonio.

"They sat their guys for the last three or four games," Duncan said. "They're trying to stay where they're at. Obviously, they've chosen their matchup and want to stick with it."
