Stop being duped by the 3D scam

Takeaway: The entertainment and electronics industries keep trying to push 3D on consumers, even though a lot of smart people have caught on to the fact that it’s a scam. It’s time to stop the madness.

I could never stand 3D. I hate those damn glasses. Isn't worth getting glasses that are under/oversized that you have to put on just to see a picture somewhat clearly, and suffer the headaches/sores from the glasses, not the tv.

I think that 3D gaming could be awesome, but I haven't had a chance to play any yet to find out.

Are the problems the author lists fixable through better technology or an inherent limitation of the 3D format?

LnG I think its obvious that they could make it look better over time, but for me it adds nothing and is merely a gimick. I don't feel more immersed in the movies at all and it adds nothing at a raised rate.

As long as I'm given the option I really don't care, though.

I'd say, and have said, keep the 3D hype alive. I don't care for it. Maybe the occasional 3D movie at the theater but keep it alive to keep the prices of 2D sets down. Or somewhat down.

George Lucas has been saying that 3D was the future of filmmaking for years, even before the prequels were released, and now he's spending more money converting Episode 1 into 3D than it did to make it in the first place if I remember right. With the success of Avatar and the release of the Nintendo 3DS, Lucas might be on to something.

But for me there's not enough quality 3D les out there that makes it worth it. Although I did think Avatar was one of a moviegoing experience and Hubble 3D was fun as well. However when it comes to Toy Story 3D and other movies where 3D seemed more like an afterthought than a driving part of the experience...not so much...

I can't stand 3D.. saw my first film in 3D last summer and it hurt my eyes. Bought the 3Ds and have the same problem where it just doesn't feel right and most of the time I just shut it off. I know there are quite a bit of people that have the same issues with it bothering them as I do.

Maybe the occasional 3D movie at the theater but...
Exactly. Some movies can benefit from having 3D. Not be totally dependent on it, but it can add a little something.

I saw Harry Potter (not the last one, but the one before because I had a free pass) and only the first few scenes were in 3D, which sucked.

But I was thinking that some of the scenes could have looked pretty cool in 3D. But a lot of movies don't need to be 3D. The 2D versions will do just fine (or even suck just as bad as the 3D version).

Really, only movies that rely on lots of visual effects (not necessarily computer, but just grand, sweeping type scenes) should be considered (but not necessarily done) for 3D. Things like Toy Story or Drive Angry don't need to be 3D. Neither one benefits from being in 3D.

Right when Ep III came out, I read that he was taking a few years off then going back and making every episode in 3D. Should be interesting what he does with it.

I don't think it will add anything or even be that good. Really, if a movie is going to be in 3D it has to be shot in 3D with certain aspects of the film taking advantage of new dimension.

Going back and converting isn't anything special at all.

Avatar was the first and last movie I saw in 3D that I actually felt the 3D aspect made it something special. Saw UP, Toy Story 3 in 3d with my daughter and felt ripped off both times. The colors aren't as vibrant and I found myself with the glasses off for the most part during both of those

I got a samsung 3D tv because the deal i got online for it was cheaper than its non 3D equivalent. I totally agree its a stupid gimmick and would never have bought it if not for the deal.

It's a bit of a stretch to call it a scam. If you pay to see a 3D movie, you see a 3D movie. Many people like it and go back for more.

I wouldn't say it's a scam. I think it's cool. Just not cool enough for me to buy it though.

When I saw Avatar in 3D, it was f'n awesome! You must have been to a theater where they simply f'd up the projector alignment or focus.

3D, for me, is to be kept in the theater, or special glasses that have two screens built in. Not on the limitations of a TV screen.
