Garza Proposes Finals Bet With Detroit Mayor
    LAST UPDATE: 6/8/2005 4:05:20 PM
    Posted By: Jim Forsyth

Outgoing San Antonio Mayor Ed Garza has offered to bet Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick a week's pay over the outcome of the Spurs-Pistons NBA Finals series that begins tomorrow night.

    But there's a catch. A big one.

Garza's salary as mayor is $50 a week. Kilpatrick is a full time mayor with an annual salary of $175,000. That works out to a little under $3400 that Kilpatrick would have to fork over if the Spurs win.

There's another catch. Another big one.

Garza leaves office June 17th, before the scheduled fifth game of the series. So, unless one team sweeps, Garza won't even be mayor when the series ends.

In a letter to Kilpatrick today, he also calls on the city of Detroit, if the Spurs win, to proclaim that San Antonio, with the Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Texas plant set to open next year, as the 'premier automotive manufacturing city in the U.S.'

He also bets a dinner for two at Biga on the Banks, up against dinner at a 'restaurant of your choosing to be used on my next visit to Detroit.'

"I hope this proposal is not too intimidating of aggressive," Garza writes. "However, as your Pistons will soon find out, that's the way we like to play in San Antonio." A spokesman for Kilpatrick said Detroit's mayor had not yet received the letter, and was curious to learn of Garza's impending departure from office.

Sounds like Detroit gets the crap end of the stick either way.

Really classy, Ed. Couldn't they have waged a crate of Taco Cabana quesadillas versus a case of motor oil or something?

Kwame (Detroit's loser mayor) better ask for assylum from the citizens of the "D" when they come after him for running the city further into the ground.

Obviously, this is just a publicity stunt on Ed's part to show San Antonians what a good job he's done on only $50 a week (ie, bringing the Toyota plant, etc.).

If only the Wizards could have gotten to the finals. A bushel of jalapenos vs. some of Mayor Berry's personal stash.

It's embarrassing that he has my name.
