Sons last night I performed a full system restore on a family members gateway desktop and now I cannot get it to connect to the internet. I have done restores before and never had an issue where the computer wouldn't pick up the connection, but its almost as if this gateway doesn't even recognize the ethernet cables. I know that its not the internet service because the computer has a router connected to it and the wireless service works just fine. Any ideas of what I could do to fix this and what could be causing the issue? In the network connections I can see the broadband service is connected, but in the connections tab under "internet options" in internet explorer it shows nothing. The network wizard won't pick it up either.

Well sons we have quite the expert here! ... son she got a virus by opening up an email. The computer is used at a business and doesn't have any programs like naptster, limewire, or even itunes on it. As a matter of fact it only had about 3gigs on it when I restored it lol.now I need to know what could be causing it to not connect to the web.
If wireless works ok, why not just get a wireless adapter for your computer.

You sure you got rid of the virus?
Try going on the internet through Safe mode with networking. If it works then your computer is most likely still infected.
And are you sure there's nothing wrong with the cable?
Might also want to check the driver
right click on "my Computer" and select "Manage"
Go to "Device Manager" and check to see if there are missing drivers or conflicts.
If so, go to support.gateway.com on a working computer and download drivers onto a thumb drive.... I believe Gateway has a similar system to Dell where there is a sticker somewhere on the computer with an iden y tag or service tag that you can enter to ensure you get the specific drivers for that specific computer.
If there are no conflicts in the device manager, check the TCP/IP properties of the local area connection.... It may be trying to specify an invalid IP address, gateway or DNS server.... try setting everything to Dynamic if this is the case.
An easy way to test that is to go to a command prompt (Start/Run and type CMD, hit enter, or in Windows 7 in the search field when you click "start" just type CMD) and once at a prompt type "ipconfig /all" and see what it comes up with.... If it shows anything, post it here.
In internet options, go to the connections tab and click on the "Lan Settings" button and make sure its not specifying a Proxy server....
Beyond that, Malware or a Virus infection may be the culprit and no ammount of restores may fix it, the restore may be infected itself. At that point, you may want to load into safemode with networking and see if it works that way, if it does, try downloading Malwarebytes and running it.
Beyond that, its hard to help unless I can get my hands on it and look for myself.

There is another option that might work.... Load up the Windows installer and continue on as if you are going to reload the system, after you accept the agreement or whatever at some point the installer will search for previous version of windows. You can then select a repair option......
When the installer first loads, it gives you an option to repair and will take you to a command console, thats not what you want..... go past that as if you are doing a new install and it will search for a previous version, at that point it gives you another choice to repair.... It will look like its reloading the computer, but its not, its just replacing all of the core system files within the Windows directory... all profiles/programs/data will still be intact.
If that doesnt work, you can still reload but if the OS boots, I would suggest going into the profiles and saving the following folders to an external HDD.
Windows XP will be:
c:\do ents and settings\*user account*\Do ents
c:\do ents and settings\*user account*\Favorites
c:\do ents and settings\*user account*\Desktop
Windows Vista or 7 will be:
c:\users\*user account*\Do ents
c:\users\*user account*\Favorites
c:\users\*user account*\Desktop
you may have to search for a *.pst file to save e-mail information, I could give you the path for Office but it depends on the version, normally its under:
c:\do ents and settings (or users)\*user account\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.
You will have to allow viewing Hidden files and folders. In XP, click tools, folder options, view tab, click the bubble for "view hidden files and folder"
In Windows Vista or 7, click "organize", then "Folder and Search options" and do the same.
GatewayPERIOD!
You probably need to install the driver for the network adapter. It usually comes on another CD. Alternatively you can download it off the internet on another computer and transfer it over.
But yeah, go to the device manager and see if you can even see a network adapter. If not, you need the driver. If its there.. I got nothing.
