McDonald's restaurants in Europe will soon be swapping the chain's legendary "service with a smile" with "service with a beep." European McDonald's restaurants are preparing to replace cashiers with touch screen computers at terminals where customers will be able to order up their hamburgers and fries and pay with credit cards.
About 7,000 of the fast food franchise's locations in the United Kingdom will be fitted with the touch screen technology, which aims to make the McDonald's experience more convenient and accommodating.
The touch screen method of ordering will improve efficiency and make the average transaction three to four seconds faster for each customer, Steve Easterbrook, president of the European branch of McDonald's, told the Financial Times. Easterbrook didn't provide a date for when the touch screens, which were inspired by a trip to Japan, will be introduced to UK McDonald's restaurants.
The new terminals will also phase out cash as an accepted payment method, as the machines will only take credit and debit cards. No word yet on whether McDonald's in the United States will be next in line to replace cashiers with computers, but the addition doesn't seem to be part of the ongoing $1-billion makeover of the company's U.S. restaurants.

Who are the fat black people going to yell at then?
Sucks for high school kids....
Most McD's only have two or three cashiers working at one time and when I do go inside it usually is one. They will still need them to cook and run the drive thru window and maintenance. There will be some lost positions though.
at first I thought "hey, now they can't put my order in wrong like they ALWAYS do" but then I remember that all the illegals in the kitchen who can't speak English will it up regardless
I'm not kidding when I say that EVERY TIME I order there I have to go back cause they ed up the burger. I remember literally 1 time they got it right
i like this idea![]()
Maybe they'll utilize pics.....
somehow they never remember to leave pickles off my mcdouble, tbh.
Not sure this will necessarily "streamline" the industry, considering how long it takes those stupid s Wal-Mart/Kroger/H-E-B to get through the self-checkout lines. For every "3-4 seconds saved" (seriously, how ing lazy/fat are we?), there'll be another 20 secs wasted on the idiots who can't figure out how to get their coupon to work...
That's probably because you're one of those picky little s that asks for a burger no ketchup pickles cut in squares half a lttuce leaf thirteen onions cheese not touching the bread and a dong up your ass.
no shyt
these are the same people that just can't go up a drive through and ask for the #1,#2.#3, with drink. noooooooooo
they want the #1 with no onions, but want onion rings, easy on the ice, no pickles...etc, etc....
Or the people who decide to order food for like 12 people through the drive-thru. IMO it should be treated like an express lane, but maybe I'm the selfish one.
Fortunately a lot of places have actually learned time management and are a lot better about making these guys pull up and wait by the curb.

On another note, I'll be surprised if they go this route in the U.S., at least 100%. They may introduce the machines, but I bet they'll also have cashiers available.
Still, people will probably wait in longer lines just to avoid the human interaction, just like they do at HEB, Wally World, etc...
yeaaahh.......try "no cheese"
And guess what's ALWAYS on my burger...cheese
nice attempt to try an turn it on me though
And even if I were those type of people that yall describe, so ing what? It's not a complicated algebra equation to read the damn screen or ticket and make what it says. And don't bring up time. It will take less time to make the burger with half the stuff on it than the burger that comes with everything on it
making life harder than it has to be.
first of all, the only times they have burgers sitting there ready is when business is slow as anyways. The rest of the day they have to make every order as they come because they get so backed up.
As far as just taking what I don't want off the burger, the ing cheese melts into the damn bun and into the meat. You can't just peel it off. It's like scraping dog off the bottom of your shoe except you can't just get a hose and blast it off
Just curious: there are still HEBs with self check? The one in Schertz took them out, which is a bummer because I used it ALL of the time.
So why do you keep going?
The workers there cannot be demoted to a lower position in the working world. Shoveling pays more. It's like ing about how bad the soup is at the soup line downtown, or how uncaring the hooker seemed last night.
Chicken is pretty nasty. Hotdogs, there's your pure meat.
Well now cause it's cheap as . And also the times where I didn't have a choice like me and my family going on vacation or to the grandparents back as a kid
The bottom line is that you keep going back. It's cheap as because they pay ty. ty paid people do ty work.
Arguments about fast food order accuracy are why I am here. I love this place.
Don't ever change, you cranky assholes.
Funny, as soon I read McDonalds my first thought was dog .
aren't you the same who blamed the guy who got his car broken into 3 times cause he lived in the same spot the whole time?
Anyway, they get minimum wage just like millions of others. Stupid excuse
