Apple iOS 5 for iPhone & iPad: What features to expect

For starters, widgets. Just like what we've grown accustomed to on Android phones and tablets, iOS 5 is expected to deliver widgets to Apple devices so users no longer need to always launch apps to get the information they need.
Another popular rumor suggests that Apple will finally be doing away with the need to connect your iPhone or iPad to iTunes in order to receive updates. That's right, iOS 5 may bring OTA (over the air) updates.
Then there is features like iCloud (cloud based storage) which Apple has confirmed will be making its way to WWDC.
Lastly there is talk of built-in voice navigation, something we've been hearing about for sometime now.
With WWDC just around the corner, we will soon find out.

ota is desperately needed, widgets unlikely. apple likes to do things way slowly with battery life in mind

It's gonna be interesting to see how they are gonna integrate widgets in the iOS architecture.
But I agree, and even though I'm a lazy ass, widgets are not needed; emails, calendar, weather etc are easy to access anyway

Wow. I'll believe OTA updates when I see it. You can't download an app over 10MB unless it's through wifi. OTA means OTA, not *if wi-fi available. At least that's how I see it. It's OTC drugs, not OTC drugs iff It's done over a marble counter.

Why upgrade if there's no need? The 3G is a capable smartphone. Sure the iP4 does more, but how many people actually use an old smartphone to the full extent of their capabilities?

Oh, and OTA upgrades over a 3G connection would be a nightmare.

THe problem is that the IP3G has a hard time supporting the most recent iterations of iOS

Other than that, it's still a super phone

then why is itunes popping up the message "update your phone" to OS 4 even on you iphone 3G???

I tell you why, Apple lazy asses do not want to maintain multiple OS.

most users are dumb and will update their phones. Especially to get the latest security patches.

    Apple ed up

No one really maintains different versions of os' for phones, there is no reason to. If you keep your phone for more than two years with any manufacturer you will be left behind. I have no problem with buying a new iPhone and selling my old one hacked at the cost I paid for the new one.

Microsoft does. Microsoft releases security updates/bugfixes for their older OSs for a long time until they get desupported. And the decission to desupport something was based on how many clients were still using the OS. I'm pretty sure this includes Windows phones.

I am pretty sure Google will follow the same model.

Apple's model is complete failure. You want bugfixes and security updates? upgrade your OS! what the we care if it slows down you phone to a crawl

Someone isn't grasping the concept of a new OS and an update of an iOS

Yes, apple gambled on people buying new phones. Some people were going to get cornholed. I'm sorry for your cornhole. Fwiw, I have a 3GS and will not update to iOS 5.

    "minimum"

    "recommended"

My phone probably could run it, but it's probably not "recommended".
