The four apps thing is just the launcher. You can change that at any time. I like to use Zeam.
However, where you will see major improvements is through developer ROMs
Just got the update from Froyo to Gingerbread on my Droid X this morning. Pretty nice. Having the 4 permanent apps of your choosing on the bottom is cool, plus I was able to take off Juice Defender because Gingerbread has a built in battery optimizer. Theres a few more improvements, but nothing really earth shattering.

You need to get launcher pro. Very very awesome.
The best thing about gingerbread is the crt animation and edge glow on the menus, purely aesthetic. The worst thing is that they stopped supporting wma files, which is petty and an annoyance. And yeah, get launcher pro.
agreed. just installing that and leaving trash motoblur will make you feel like you upgraded the software significantly. the developer is really good at supporting his app, even if he promised to redo his app and is about 4 months late on the release for that.
It's in the Android app store?
I got an old ass HTC Mytouch...
it can't handle the gingerbread huh.. ?
^
get some roms/kernels on that brah
just updated it on my droidx too and i thought i ing bricked the phone...after about 10 battery pulls it finally loaded correctly...phew...i really didnt want to do a factory reset.
I have an almost as old HTC Hero running GB 2.3.4. It makes your phone faster because the code and processes have become more efficient.
How exactly can I get that for my phone?
I don't know about roms/kernels and all that crap.. but my phone is relatively slow...
xda-developers.com should be a place for you to hang out and read about development for your phone.
I went there and looked up the mytouch and spent about a minute in the "android development" forum for the mytouch and came up with a couple of links.
First, to root your phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=547133
Then if you go here (the android dev forum) You will see a lot of threads with the word ROM in the le. These are roms you can install so you can get 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 etc.
