Yes he is better than Garnett. At least better career.
Fewer topics have consumed more time on ST than this one. Kobe-stuff is probably at the top, but the debate for this issue rages on.
I said a couple of years back that regardless of what I though of them as players, with KG getting a ring, he had a better career than Dirk. No point telling you what I all think about that now.
So, after last night's events, what does everyone think?
Yes he is better than Garnett. At least better career.
I think it's a very tough call, but they are undoubtedly the 2nd and 3rd best PFs of all time. They both take a on Malone and Barkley.
It's really hard to say. KG separates himself on the defensive end where Dirk is nowhere to be seen. But Dirk led his team to a le as THE man. KG could never do that.
EDIT: After reading comments in another thread, I think what separates these two is Dirk's ability to be the man at closing time. Dirk is clutch in the 4th, and takes the shots in crunch time. KG = LeBron, he plays hot potato with the ball. KG is a glue guy holding down a team defensively, but you don't give him the ball to win a game down the stretch. That's why his most successful years were with Pierce, Allen, Cassell, and Sprewell.

First of, where is McHale on most people's lists? Why is he so forgotten?
Second, that second part, I am not so sure. Maybe Malone chokes all the time, but Chuck played his ass off in 93. His problem? He was facing the GOAT playing at probably his highest level ever. Le's not underrate those two this easily yet.
KG a better role player. Dirk a better scorer.
It really is a tough call. I think I still lean towards KG by the slimmest of margins. Dirk is obviously the more dominant scorer and more clutch at the offensive end. I still value KG's defensive prowess and all around versatility just ever so slightly more. But I can be easily convinced to go in favor of Dirk. I'm definitely straddling the fence. It's as close a debate as you can get IMO.
I have my theory btw, but I am waiting on some people's comments. Jammy being on the fence is a surprise, because he was strongly for KG during a lot of these years.
I think it's a easy call. They both went to two finals and both went 1 for 2. Dirk was able to do what he did on his original team. He didn't have to get trade to another team and join two other all-stars to win a le. I mean Dirk just won a le with no other all-stars on his team. Did KG do that? no. Did KG win finals MVP? no
It's an easy decision, IMHO.
This is tough. They were both on lesser teams for most of their careers and won a le later on. KG was the man on that Celtics team but it was more of a 1a/1b/1c kinda thing with him/Pierce/Ray. Dirk on the other head is clearly the #1 option on the Mavs and he won his first le in a more impressive fashion over a better team. Though I could argue that this Mav team has more talent around Dirk than any Minnesota team had around KG.
It's a tough call. KG has slightly more career accomplishments and was a much better/versatile defender in his heyday. I guess over their careers I'd say KG is better overall but I think Dirk has had a better career.
Dirk's performance in these playoffs definitely had a huge impact on that. I've liked Dirk's game for a while. Not a fanboi like I am with Kobe, but certainly respected Dirk and his game. And his championship is more impressive than KG's because of the teammates / supporting cast each had. I do look at the entire game of each. But I also do think I could be persuaded towards Dirk's side.
Dirk's performance in the 4th quarters of these Finals was just nuts. He really put himself up on the GOAT list with his 2011 showing. Props to him.
i see the same old arguments KG fans like to bring up, the same they been using it against duncan to prop up their player, now they wanna do the same against dirk....
give me dirk, could care less about his avg defense, when you have 4 other guys on the court that could cover his ass in help and team defense, thats all it matters, he will burn you on the offensive end unless ur bruce bowen...
don't steal my thunder yet! Don't make that argument public!
So you give Chuck the "Jordan Pass" but won't do the same for Malone x2 ?![]()
Your sig is a winner

I go back and forth. I can easily convince myself that one is greater than the other, and then I can flip it just as easily.
Personal opinion, and I watched both of those series, is that Malone really choked a lot in the Finals. He had a good game or two, but Rodman played with his mind a lot.
Now he might have done the same with Chuck, but he wasn't there for the 93 run. And chuck played amazing ball. You could play that series 10 times, and it would have been 5-5. It really took the best MJ to beat him.
They're both equal IMO, so let's just settle this in terms of classiness?
If classiness is the dividing quality, it's not even a contest!
Anything is possible vs. Dirk crying off the court! Which is more classy? Tough choice.![]()
So is yours![]()
you could say the same for kg, give him a closer (like pierce or casell) and ill take the 22 points, 13 boards, 5 assists, and couple of steals and blocks+all-world defense that KG gives me...
this used to not even be much of an argument to people other than mav homers or re s, but after these playoffs dirk has definitely edged much closer to kg. id still give kg the slight edge though.
