Seattle kept the history in part of the deal they made with the owning group that brought the team to OKC.

The City of Seattle made sure it was part of the deal to buy the Sonics that Seattle gets to keep the Supersonics name and history. That way, if the NBA ever puts another team back in Seattle, it will get to have that name and history. The Thunder do not own the history of the Sonics.
