I support the bill, but don't see it going anywhere. Since making predictions seems to be all the rage on this board lately, I'll even go ahead and predict that this bill never makes it out of committee. Shame though. Here's a golden opportunity for the party who likes to pretend they're for limiting Washington's control on people's lives to do something to limit Washington's control on people's lives.

Kudos to Paul & Frank for making the attempt.

crofl thinking for half a second that republicans are really against government intrusion

texas jess passed mandatory preabortion sonograms

as in, forcing women to get a probe shoved inside of them, and listen to the fetal heartbeat (i guess to punish those crazy ladies for their 'sin')
Rick Perry's idea of "small government" is one that can fit inside a woman's vagina.

10Ks persons are maimed or die every year from prescription and OTC drugs (eg ACETAMINOPHEN), but how many die from marijuana per year, or have EVER died from marijuana?

"small govt". and "against government runaway spending, takeover, intrusion" are just huge fundamental LIES the Repugs/tea baggers campaign on to sucker sheeple/bubba/red-state voters, but not an actual Repug governing principle.

The Repugs and Dems will decriminalize marijuana when BigPharma is ready to monopolize the market and dictates decriminalization. I bet the taxes on mj will punitive and much higher than those of booze and tobacco (some Repugs want to remove taxes from tobacco).

That it's being discussed openly is notable. No way the US Congress would give this issue any oxygen even a few years back.

According to the Associated Press, House Judiciary Committee Chair Lamar Smith said his panel, which the proposed law is required to pass through, will turn down the HR 2306 bill.

“Marijuana use and distribution is prohibited under federal law because it has a high potential for abuse and does not have an accepted medical use in the U.S.,” said Smith, who is also a Republican from Texas. “The Food and Drug Administration has not approved smoked marijuana for any condition or disease.”

Smith said that marijuana leads to other drugs, and that legalization would lead to stronger drug cartels — an argument that legalization advocates absolutely disagree with.

“Decriminalizing marijuana will only lead to millions more Americans becoming addicted to drugs and greater profits for drug cartels who fund violence along the U.S.-Mexico border,” he said. “Allowing states to determine their own marijuana policy flies in the face of Supreme Court precedent.”

The Marijuana Policy Project, an advocacy group for marijuana decriminalization and regulation, said HR 2306 would be the first bill ever introduced in Congress to stop federal marijuana prohibition.

This is a health issue, be it medical marijuana we are talking about, or addiction itself.

Criminalization simply forces production out of the US and somewhere else.

Let the entrepreneurs and legitimate american business in on it, and you take a billion dollar business out of the shadows AND free up law enforcement to deal with the other drugs you that we should be more concerned with.

Sorry, this guy just fails on so many levels.

There's no health problem with mj.

There is a problem with inhaling any smoke and pollution, but Repugs want to ENABLE health by pollution deaths by killing EPA air (and water) regs.
