Michele Bachmann played a trump card after her official presidential announcement Monday, using singer-songwriter Tom Petty’s song “American Girl” to casually point out to voters that she is the only female candidate as yet in the Republican nomination race.
But Petty let NBC reporter Kelly O’Donnell know Monday after Bachmann’s presidential declaration in her hometown of Waterloo, Iowa, that he wanted no part of Bachmann’s celebrity or her campaign.
O’Donnell reported that Petty’s manager let her know in no uncertain terms that the megastar didn’t want Bachmann to use the song again, the Washington Post’s Sarah Anne Hughes reported.
Bachmann isn’t the only or the first Republican to get the hook from Petty. In 2000, George Bush was advised to halt use of Petty’s song “I Won’t Back Down.”
Republican presidential candidate John McCain was also asked in 2008 to stop use of music performed by the Foo Fighters and John Mellencamp.
But not all candidates are created equal.
Hillary Clinton used the same Petty standard, “American Girl,” during her own 2008 presidential campaign without the singer’s objection, Today.com

"American Woman" would have been exactly appropriate
American woman Stay away from me
American Woman Mama let me be
Don’t come Hanging around my door
I don’t want to see your face No more
I got more important Things to do

This is such a petty thing.
I was thinking maybe something like "Crazy Train"
I'll bet she is devastated, Tom is such a heartbreaker.
We know that Petty won't back down
This little snafu won't stop Bachman from Runnin' down her dream.
Ugh. Enough with the Tom Petty puns. Don't do me like that. Better yet, don't come around here no more.
Tom Petty puns? I was just talking about Bachmans Freefallin campaign.
Well, that's the good thing about America. Even The Losers can run for president.
Well no matter what happens, she has to Listen to Her Heart and keep going until the American people tell her Don't come around here no more.
Hopefully that happens soon. The Waiting is the hardest part.
Well its obvious when observing her temperament that as soon as that happens, she will have a Breakdown.
And to think that the trolls in the club don't think the political forum junkies have a sense of humor...
They don't need to do us like that.
Obama should use "Free Falling" when talking about the economy.

In what way is it free falling now, Darrin?
Booooo! OT and already used.

Booooo even more! and now the thread is gone. You three have fun.
She should use a John Lennon song, as he is the poster boy for republicans now.
You're jamming me.
