No sense hating 3D for the sake of hating 3D. The trailer looks gorgeous. And it's being shot using 3D cameras, rather than relying upon a post-production 3D conversion. The le change seems unnecessary (was originally The Invention of Hugo Cabret, like the novel on which it is based), but other than that I have high hopes.

More than anything, I'm surprised, and a bit saddened, that Scorsese has made the move to digital after being such an outspoken fan of shooting on film. I get that it's a necessary choice due to the 3D cameras, but it just doesn't look the same. I'm not looking forward to the day digital becomes standard.

It doesn't. It has to do with the fact that there's a load of people out there who will pay to watch 3D movies, enough so that filmmakers will shoot with 3D cameras to help their movies profit.
