Fans flock to Graceland to remember Elvis Presley

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Silent mourners with heads bowed and yellow-orange candlelight leading the way paid their respects to Elvis Presley at his grave at Graceland, his longtime Memphis home, to remember the 34th anniversary of his sudden death.

Thousands of Elvis devotees, candles in hand, walked in the humid night to the graves of Elvis and his relatives, some wiping away tears as they filed past. Flower arrangements and heart-shaped wreaths decorated the burial site as "If I Can Dream" and other songs played softly in the background.

The vigil was to extend past midnight and into Tuesday morning, marking the anniversary of the King's death on Aug. 16, 1977. The vigil is the main draw of "Elvis Week," and some waited hours outside the stately mansion for the procession to start.

Paula Penna came with her family from Campinas, Brazil, for her sixth vigil. Penna, who met her Brazilian husband in an Elvis fan club, cried and hugged him, her sister and aunt after paying her respects.

It is a generational thing. To the younger peeps he would be seen as overrated. But to me all the newer music is Wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy AND highly overrated.

    My kids though love Elvis.

When he was good, he was fantastic. I still don't know why fans commemorate his dying from not being able to take a though.

    This.

Hard to deny that anyone followed/idolized as fervently as Elvis is overrated, or that his later stuff went off-the-charts cheesy. But it's equally difficult to argue something like The Sun Sessions.

He wasn't a " bag". He was slightly before my time but I saw an excellent do entary about him the other day on Bio. He knew what he wanted to be from an early age and went for it. His success was no accident. He also seemed to be a good person and a believer in redemption. His concerts for the prisoners of San Quentin and Folsom remain unparelleled. No artist today would have the balls to do that.

It's only cheesy because it looks like an Elvis impersonator and so many people have copied it to the point of cheesiness. Vegas acts are mostly cheese fests today (I like Cirque). It's like calling Evil Knievel's act cheesy. When these guys were doing it, it wasn't considered cheesy.

Elvis was the man. He actually died on the throne, king until death.

    It's all subjective I guess.

I know quite about him myself, I took a whole course about Elvis's life. Sure he was a decent guy, that doesn't mean he wasn't a bag . While in his 20s in the military he dated a 14-year old girl and IMO he wasn't a great singer. Elvis the product sold extremely well for many reasons, it wasn't because the bag could sing well, and nearly all of his songs were covers. Seriously...like ing all of them, I barely remember learning about Elvis writing any songs. He literally replayed old songs and air-humped on stage for a bunch of young little s that have never seen any thing like it. Honestly, he doesn't deserve much more recognition than Justin Beaver, but of course he's known as the King of Rock n Roll. But but but..if it weren't for Elvis, we wouldn't have rock today in the 2000s!!!! It just would never have happened!!! When 90% of your fame is attributed to the behavior of 13-year old girls, no matter how famous, does not mean you were a great musician.

lol I don't have a grudge on Elvis, I don't hate him or anything, but damn was he overrated as a musician. And IMO he was a bag, a lot of that opinion is influenced by having to live through that gay ass Elvis course for a whole semester .

Meh, I've heard some pretty good descriptions from kids younger than that. Some better than my colleagues have.
