It'll only keep growing while inflation raises up prices of goods, rent, utilities, etc except wages. Notice how some of the people mentioned in the article have a job, but they still don't make enough to make ends meet.
At the same time, the cost doubled to reach $68 billion in 2010 -- more than a third of the amount the U.S. government received in corporate income tax last year -- which means the program has started to attract the attention of some Republican lawmakers looking for ways to cut the nation's budget deficit.

Illegal immigrants are ineligible for foodstamps.
A kid born in the US is an American citizen, and thus eligible to receive the benefits.
And tbh, the largest estimates by the CBO of foodstamps benefits received by illegal immigrants with kids is about $2 billion. If the current cost is indeed about $68 billion, then that's only less than 3%. That means there's another 97% that are Americans and still need/receive the benefits.
Heck, the people on the article jack linked to are Americans, earning wages, and still unable to make ends meet. After all the federal minimum wage is $7.25/hour.
A resident is not an illegal immigrant.
As a resident I can tell you that in order to obtain residency you have to prove you can sustain yourself (among other things, you have to send 3 years of tax returns, joint tax returns if you're claiming residency through marriage, to prove you make enough money not to require government help). Not only that, just filing residency papers cost about $1000.
I just filed my citizenship papers today, and I also had to send the IRS transcripts for the past 3 years plus another check for $680.
tbh, being a legal immigrant costs a lot of time and money, and the burden a lot of times is a lot higher than on illegal immigrants. Which is why I have a big problem with illegal immigration.
Well, I'm not sure where you're at. I'm speaking from personal experience too as far as the burden to obtain a green card is concerned. When you're in front of the immigration officer, you can't fake it. No tax records = no green card.
Illegal immigrants can get access to food stamps if they have a kid born in America. Being that the kid is an American citizen, the child qualifies for food stamps (and obviously it's the parents that use them). AFAIK, that type of foodstamp usage is about 3% though. Feel free to correct me if you know different.
But here's something to chew on:
http://www.bls.gov/cps/minwage2010.htm
About 1 in 20 workers paid on an hourly-basis are paid the federal minimum wage of $7.25 or less.
Another nugget from it:
The percentage of workers earning the minimum wage did not vary much across the major race and ethnicity groups. About 6 percent of White hourly-paid workers earned the Federal minimum wage or less, compared with about 7 percent of Blacks and about 5 percent of Asians. Among hourly-paid workers with Hispanic ethnicity, about 6 percent earned the minimum wage or less.
I don't know about 'the vast majority' (not being an ass, I really don't know).
I have little doubt that illegals use a higher percentage of welfare in general than natives (and there are studies like this one) that show that clearly.
That said, the estimate is that illegal immigrants are about 10 million in a 300 million nation.
At an estimate of 42% of immigrants (legal and otherwise, but I'll just err on the side of caution and count them all as illegal) receiving food benefits, that amount to 4.2 million families.
Whereas 27% of native families receive food benefits. Since native families account for the other 290 million people, that comes up as 78.3 million native families receiving food benefits.
Again, depends where you live. Just going by official numbers. There's actually 3 different estimates (census, dhs, pew research) and they all put the number between 8 million and 12 million.
Even if we were to assume that 10% of the entire US population is made up of illegal aliens (30 million), that's still amounts to 12 million families receiving food benefits, compared to 78+ million native.
1) Census data does collect some illegal immigrant population. The 10 million figure is actually an adjusted number from the census data. There's other sources that do not use the census data and are not government provided, and they also match somewhere around that number.
2) Total Texas population currently stands at 24 million. Your claim that more than half the population is comprised of illegal immigrants is simply absurd (and I visit Texas fairly often).
3) Anybody born on US soil is an American citizen. Like it or not, that's a US citizen.
4) You don't backup any of your population or welfare numbers with frankly anything. If you don't like the government numbers, you could use private estimates, like Pew, but unfortunately for you, they don't really add up to your conspiracy theory either.
As traumatic your experience on a grocery story might be, even if we were to exaggerate, your numbers are not even close. So, back off the ledge.
As far as your experience with Mexicans, well, I really don't care (and I'm not mexican or mexican-related). I frankly know good people and assholes of every race, without exception.
What bugs the outta me is how many people who abuse the welfare system. Food, water a bed and other necessities should be covered. But a buncha these people have new cellphones, 3 tv's, x-box, etc. Billions of tax dollars wasted on a dysfunctional system.
I don't want them here either, and I'm not even a citizen (yet).
But looking at the numbers, I don't think they're also the big smoking gun when it comes to foodstamps.
Looking at the raising amount of people earning minimum wage or less and the fact there's no ing way in you can live off it seeing how inflation has shoot up the prices of everything makes for a more compelling reason, IMO.
I mean, the last time I heard somebody around here trying to hire illegals for some yard work they wanted $10/hour. How the $7.25/hour makes any sense in this day and age?
What pisses me off even more is when the government releases some study where they 'estimate' that $14 billion or so was spent on fraudulent benefits (I think that number was from disability payments).
If you know it's fraudulent, then go the after them, and get that money back.
I'm a citizen and I want them here. I just want a system in place that lets them come here and work legally. We need their labor.
Well, I was talking about illegals. Legally, that's another story. I put a lot of time, money and never asked or received any handout from the government (well, except for the Bush Jr stimulus check that I didn't ask for).
Thing is, you can't have them long-term for cheap work, and expect them not to end up in the foodstamp line. At that point, why not just hire American?
Why do we need their labor. Bull . A lot of people in this country need a job and are willing to work whatever. 5 years ago I wouldn't argue the point, but at the moment a lot of citizens just want a job. Enduring a long period of unemployment and no source of income will make a person happy as to find something that pays. A lot of people took that for granted before the recession. No more.
I know a guy who owns a fencing company that uses alot of illegals. He says blacks don't last a day, whites don't last a week, but the vatos can go all day busting thru limestone with a breaker bar as long as you buy them a 12 pack at the end of the day. There really is work Americans just won't do.
The problem is that you can't live off some of those jobs without some sort of welfare tacked on. Some quick math for a full time job @ minimum wage:
52 weeks * 40 hours/week = 2080 hours * $7.25 = $15080/year = $1256/month
Now, that's without any healthcare benefits, retirement or anything else taken from it. You couldn't live with that much here. Rent doesn't go below $800. Add groceries, transportation, bills. And if you have a kid, then good luck to you.
It's ridiculous. There's no way you can live on that.
Pay them fairly and they'll do it. Americans just don't want to live 12 on a 2 bedroom house. I can't blame them.
He starts them at $15/hr. What's a fair wage for someone who's only skill is to pound a hole in the ground with a metal bar in 100 degree heat?
That's not bad paid, IMO. Is it temp work though?
No it's not temp work but even the vatos only last so long before they take a break and head back home. He's got a few guys that are permanent but they do more supervising than pounding.
Honestly, the idea that there are enough willing Americans to fill every menial ty back breaking job is just ridiculous.
Slaves? Then the Chinese... then the whatever race you can think of except whites.
Hey we played an important supervisory role.
A lot of unemployed people I know would take any job right now. Unless someone provides a study that states only illegal aliens want work so and so jobs, then I won't believe it. My experience shows different.
You just swept away slavery(carried the agricultural based society), the chinese(railroads, you know to move the agricultural commerce, hispanics(building every framed concrete and wooden building that is upright, now) in defense of Bubba's 5 acre farm in the building of americas economy from labor?
No one said whites didn't do anything, but they didn't do the majority.
