Their last two albums were good. I only got to see them once. Sad day.
I'm surprised it took this long. I thought they said in the 80s that they would break up in 1990.

Refreshing to see a band that just decides it really doesn't have anything important to say...and can just call it a day....nice.
Most bands keep doing it for the money and just re-hash old tired .
REM band members say there is no drama, no hate & no fighting...they still get along and all love each other...it is just time to quit.

Interesting that they felt the need to say that they were breaking up when just a handful of people were barely aware that they are still alive.

Their last two albums were critically acclaimed but just because YOU weren't paying attention does not mean they weren't still doing quality material.
So what kind of money do you think an announcement like this would make them?
Does not make sense- since they made all the money they'll ever need...but anything is possible.
Not-nor have I ever been- in love with this band..but there are a lot worse.
This is obviously about money since they're doing a farewell tour and all. And that big formal retirement announcement... posted on their WEBSITE?? What a bunch of greedy narcissists.

Nope, it's the end of it as we know it. I know everyone's trying to put on a brave face, but I don't feel fine and I doubt anyone here really does. It's okay to admit that guys. Everybody hurts sometime.
Yup, off the top of my head I can think of about 20 others whose retirement I'd welcome before R.E.M's.
I can think of 20 things that I would be less likely to eat than Brussels Sprouts. But I still don't like Brussel Sprouts.

I always thought that Peter Buck was underrated as a guitar player....sort of like Lindsay Buckingham before him.
