And to clarify I have been in numerous accidents both during personal and job use. But this was the first instance where I was driving.
And of course my car is totaled. It was raining and I lost control of it on the beltway. To make a long story short for those here who have been in accidents like that how long did it take you to be able to drive in the rain again without feeling like you did when yo first started driving? I am fine when its dry but when its raining I am totally paranoid. This happened last Friday.
And to clarify I have been in numerous accidents both during personal and job use. But this was the first instance where I was driving.
I lost it on black ice on the Memorial Shoreway in Cleveland almost 30 years ago. I almost got it back for a second then it went completely. I was just along for the ride then and hit a steel light pole sideways. It knocked me out of galoshes and I ended up in the passenger seat.
30 years later I still have nightmares about that pole comin' at me and completely unable to do anything about it.
Yeah I knew I lost it once she started to fishtail on me. I just braced myself and leaned back into my seat (got knocked out by a passenger side airbag before) Thankfully I just crashed into the median wall. Oh and literally five minutes later a 20y/o girl did the exact same thing I did I guess and crashed into the front of my car totally destroying that part of it. Then the kicker of the story is my boss showed up in a city tow truck to tow my car but he came up on the wrong side of the beltway, so as he was trying to get back onto the beltway so he could come onto my side someone rear ended him. A very strange day.
That paranoid feeling will never go away. I never got into an accident in the rain but I got that feeling when I first felt my tires slip away.
I hydroplaned 8 yrs ago and my car fell into a 5 foot ditch and gave me a gash on my eyebrow and I am still paranoid when driving in on wet conditions.
My uneasiness is so bad that I even worry about other cars slipping and hitting me.
Its just a very uneasy feeling knowing you are about to crash and can't do anything about it. I think if I had been driving a SUV I probably would had flipped over. And of course my rental what do they give me.Now anytime it is raining I feel like I am slipping or something.
like that sticks with you for a while. I was blindsided by a tow-truck which ran a stop sign about 2 years ago, nailed me on the front-passenger side and totaled my car. The hit was so sudden that I didn't even get to hit the brakes, and was so hard that I was wearing my seatbelt and somehow my head still bumped the windshield. If it weren't for the belt, I might've gone through. I was fortunate to walk away with just general soreness and a bump on the noggin.
Only took me a couple weeks before I generally was comfortable driving again, but I still find myself tapping the breaks and peaking around corners when I'm passing through blind intersections. Especially the one where the wreck occurred, which is right by my work and on the way to my favorite place for lunch (which is where I was going when the wreck happened).
I thought you were a cop for some reason. But no no accidents here only been driving like a year![]()
I am. Thats why I said I have been in several accidents at work while pursuing fleeing suspects or responding to a call. But in all instances I was never the one driving. I have been driving since I was 18. I am 33 now. I have had my share of sliding in the snow into a curb maybe causing slight damage, but never nothing of this magnitude before.
Skidded for a few yards in the rain and hit some car while it was at a stop light. I was going about 40mph. I was like 19 at the time and felt powerless in the skid. I guess I braked to late. I didn't really have a fear of driving in the rain after because I felt it was my cars fault for being so old
I kept thinking if I had one of them newer cars this would not have happen.
That is somewhat true with the all performance tires with ceramic brakes and ABS and traction controls from newer models.
That icky feeling will stick with you for a while, but after driving in the rain a few times after or having to put yourself in that position again it should get better. I know I avoid a certain lane on 410 from now on because I got rear ended there a few months ago. But the car was totalled so you get a new one, no? I'd be stoked about that.
find an empty parking lot when its raining and learn how your car handles on slippery surfaces. it's unintuitive and really takes lots of hours of practice.
Bend over, I'll show ya a in' pole coming at you that you are completely unable to do anything about.
Ive been passenger in few accidents never while driving. anytime im riding with someone now I get a little worried. a few years back a friend and I flipped a car going 70 down a hillside into a creek. we both walked away but im very paranoid to this day while riding with someone else.
I cannot drive during traffic in a freeway anymore. Im just too paranoid and s shocked. I have flashbacks to my first and only wreck![]()
Since I saw the movie "Psycho", I've been scared to kill a woman in the shower.
Oh yeah she is finished. If it wasn't totaled after my accident the girl who ran into my front sure as finished it off for me. Basically the front of my car cushioned her from going full on impact into the median wall. In a way I am glad it happened the way it did because she was driving an older style truck that didn't have airbags. If she had slammed into that median wall verses my car she would had been seriously injured. My car was newer so I had the side airbags and the whole nine. The only thing I am stoked about is getting back into a 4 cylinder. The V6 was cool and all but I was spending boatloads of money on gas.

Yeah I actually thought about doing that. I was driving so slow and braking in the rain two days later people were literally going around me. I felt like I was losing control on every curve. It was really bad.

General rule for driving on a wet road: If there is a shiny or reflective area on the road, slow down because that is where you will most likely start to hydroplane.
This pretty much saved my life a few months back, I was driving to seattle with bald tires on a rear wheel drive at 5am for class, first puddle I hit I went two lanes over almost into a guardrail.
I ended up driving 50mph the rest of the wayI consider myself a pretty good driver, drove in pretty much all conditions with no problems but that was the first time I scared the outta myself.
Hydroplaned about a year ago on 1604 at night. Decent amount of traffic was out and it scared the out of me. Definitely more cautious during rain now and make sure my tires are in good condition. Having a nice set of tires can absolutely make a difference.
