Two essay length efforts: nominal conservatroid Andrew Sullivan commiserates approvingly while NYT potted plant Frank Rich empathizes at a somewhat sociological -- and somewhat disdainful -- remove.

The Newser bit is an odd wrinkle, nothing more. Krauthammer is Krauthammer. The Pew poll suggests OWS has enhanced media attention to questions of economic hopes, fears and equitability.

Another light read from Taibbi that makes you proud to be an American.

I'll say it again; the Tea Party and OWS folks need to realize there is much common ground between them; if they can, things can be changed. If they continue to let the powers that be divide us to their own ends, well, we get what we deserve.

Unless they can combine forces and get twenty percent of the vote in the national election it won't matter.

Until people wake the up and realize that systemic changes need to be made to the Cons ution to put SCOTUS in their place and allow for more candidate and viewpoints to kill the monopoly on power nothing is going to change.

Amendment XXVIII only living organisms of the species sapien are to be considered people, person or persons.

Amendment XXIX only living organisms of the species sapien may contribute to a political candidate or political party.

Review Article 1 and 2 and remove the single member, winner take all districts and replace them with something much more inclusive.

Thats how you fix this country.

The Tea Party was much like the OWS before their message was co-opted by social conservatives, but the Tea Party crowd carried guns to their gatherings, the OWS crowd believes in peaceful resistance...

You seriously think that a democracy more in line with South and Central American countries, where the winning candidate frequently gets less than 40% of the vote, is gonna be what cures us? seriously?

i was thinking more like Germany or Australia. And it not as if certain elements like the bill of rights, the electoral college appointment of judges, etc would require changes i am just talking about how districting works.

Do you honestly believe that our districting system is functional and representative?

The only reason our system is dysfunctional is because it only takes one house,in this case the do-nothing Congress, to bog down the government, and then there is no accountability at the ballet box...well, that and we have to take the money out of politics...

My worry is that we will see candidates like Sarah Palin elected because she appeals to a large enough segment of crazy wing-nuts that she could win enough votes if each other splinter groups in the GOP have their own candidates..

    Couple of things.

The reason why 40% happens is you have 4 or more major parties. Its quite easy to get a simple majority when you start at 50% versus 25% of the options. I would argue that the 40% relative to 25% is much more representative than 52% relative the the starting 50% you see in the States. All the latter tells me is there was no choice.

However if you are truly concerned about that then you do like many countries do and have a run off over the top two or few. I do not see how you could fail to see how much more representative a system as such would be.

As for the district thing controlling farmers I did not mention a specific alternative so i cannot see how you can make that claim. If I were to for example eliminate notion of a district entirely. Instead I have parties give the Department of State a list of people they would assign seats to the house and on the ballot have the voter select party and preference of individual within party. How is that going to give rural interests disproportionate access over industrial labor, minority or other urban interests?

They around with the districts constantly anyway in an effort to marginalize groups at whim as it is.

Also keep in mind that the majority of these Occupy folks voted for Obama this past election. Just as the majority of the Tea Party voted GOP. The reason why they are out there is because they do not believe those leaders are representing them. There is a reason why they are going to business firms to air their grievances and not to the congress.
