We were all so busy gleefully burying the Miami Heat after they lost to the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals that we missed out on acknowledging a crucial bit of basketball history: The 2010-2011 season will likely go down as the year Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant saw his best argument for becoming "Better than Michael Jordan" slip away for good.

When we talk numbers, awards, memories, legacy and fame, the Jordan vs. Bryant debate is dead on arrival. Really, debating Jordan vs. anyone in these categories isn't worth the time. Jordan's statistics are absurdly better than Bryant's; his switch-hand lay-up, shoulder shrug and stepback jumper to beat the Utah Jazz all trump any Bryant highlight; he was a significantly bigger worldwide star and one of the single greatest forces in globalizing the game; the Jumpman logo only becomes more ubiquitous by the year. Bryant has scored fewer points, grabbed fewer rebounds and dished fewer assists per game both in the regular season and the playoffs. He's sold fewer sneakers and touched fewer hearts. He's won fewer MVPs, Finals MVPs and scoring les. There's not much argument.

Honestly, Bryant doesn't really deserve to be mentioned in a debate with Jordan, except for one fact: he had the chance to ac ulate more les. Winning in bulk will always get star players put up on a pedestal.

Because Bryant skipped high school and didn't take two seasons off to play baseball, his argument for toppling Jordan has always relied on ac ulation. He stands a very good chance of finishing higher than Jordan on the all-time points list, for example, an accomplishment he has reportedly been eying. But educated fans and the populous at large will both see through that accomplishment and conclude that more total points doesn't mean a better player. Not when Jordan averaged roughly five points more per game than Bryant over their careers and eight points more per game in the playoffs. Not when Jordan shot more than four percent better from the field for their careers. Not when Jordan's best scoring year (37.1 points per game in 1986-1987) was better than Bryant's best scoring year (35.4 points per game in 2005-2006). Not when Jordan won 10 scoring le's to Bryant's two. Not with Bryant getting essentially a five-year head start on ac ulating thanks to Jordan's years in college and in the Chicago White Sox organization. When Bryant passes Jordan on the scoring list it will stand as a testament to his durability, consistency, determination, pure scoring instinct and will. But it won't make him better than Jordan.

[[[thanks to Jordan's years in college and in the Chicago White Sox organization.]]]

I'll accept the college years, but, Stern ran him off for gambling. It cost Jordan his father's life. Then the cheatin' bas snuck back at the end of the season for a quick ringage.

    Uh, uh. No.

Kobe is the closest we will be to MJ for a while. How far that might be, nobody is closer.

Anywho, MJ s on Wade and Pippen s on Lebron.

well well well...what do we have here.... riding MJ and Wade's nuts... the Ace of Spades let Kool hit you with his Joker card...

“In my mind, I have what I feel is a next level. And I have a blueprint in front of me. I have the Michael Jordans of the world. I have the Kobe Bryants of the world. I have these guys that are showing what’s the next level. - Dwyane Wade [AP]

If Wade thinks he can catch Jordan, then he definitely is delusional, but something tells me that he has his sights set on Kobe’s legacy.

    Which still makes him delusional.

Wade will need to win 4 more championships to even be considered next to Kobe.

    Excellent Read....

It just shows you the disparity in league talent. It's Kobe, Lebron then it drops off significantly. Accolades aside, people fail to realize how rare it is to have a 6'8" athlete who can do the things Lebron can do. We see these guys move on the court and consider they are smaller, but they are giants. Getting one that's not clumsy and is proportionate is hard enough, but getting one who has the muscle mass and the hand-eye coordination to actually excel at sports is amazing.

But yeah, MJ s on Kobe.

yeah like bricks in the post.... that in the low post he was shooting in the finals wasn't even hitting the rim...the ball hit one side of the backboard and then the other side...totally bypassing the rim...

It's not their results, but their ability that I am referring to.

But then who the are you kidding? You will be lobbying to get James to LA in a couple of years.

IMO, MJ was more motivated, had better post game, was less predictable while driving, played better defense and was stronger. Kobe's little more athletic and shots little better. What clearly separate the two players is that MJ couldn't be stopped due to more complete offensive game, while Kobe gets stopped by elite defensive players. Hence, MJ was dominant in regular season, playoffs and finals. Kobe often sucks the whole series, and it's not just a bad game or two.

    just one of many examples...

The Spurs were shorthanded at SG in that series. DA got injured by Juwan Howard in the series against the Mavs. The Spurs were playing with Antonio Daniels at SG, he's was a fine sixth man, but he was too undersized for Kobe. Just remember that Kobe never performed consistently against any elite wing defender. He is a great player, but he was lucky to play with Shaq and the Lakers, hence his 5 championships, but he's not really good as MJ was in his prime.

For the same reason Parker had a stellar finals in 2007. He's a legit all-star player, of course, but the Cavs were shorthanded at PG.

Considering Wade's one successful trip to the ship in 2006 was a million times more impressive than anything Kobe has done in the Finals, I doubt that
