Tulane interviewed him last week and offered him the job, but apparently he turned it down. Rumor is that he's going to Arizona.

Those schools can't afford an overwhelming hire. I think he's at least worth a try for an Arizona program that doesn't have any expectations to begin with.

The issue with me is what Rich Rod did to the Michigan program.

I'd rather pay an up and comer or a guy like Mike Leach.

Underwhelming is an understatement, god awful is more like it. Keeping Stoops would have been better than hiring rod.

You're in re ed, Arizona has plenty of money to throw at a new coach with the Pac's new TV contract (Stoops was making a good amount before being fired). They could have easily afforded Leach who is >>>>>>>>>>>> rod as everyone else has said in this thread.

I'm a fan of both RichRod and Leach though I would prefer Leach.

As a Tulane alum, I remember RichRod running the offense to a 12-0 season right before Tommy Bowden left for Clemson. RichRod was thought to take over as head coach but got screwed by the administration who hired Chris Scelfo, Georgia's o-line coach and relative of a financial donor. The fan base was furious at the time because RichRod did get screwed. He followed Bowden to Clemson for two years before getting the job at WVU where he was successful.

To me, Leach and RichRod are the top two candidates out there. I prefer Leach because he competed against better compe ion at Tech and his graduation rates are high too. However, he seems to be getting blackballed most likely due to his lawsuit against ESPN. The lawsuit seems to have affected Tulane as well. They went after RichRod hard trying to make up for pass mistakes and he was about to accept before taking the Zona job at the last minute. Honestly, he probably used Tulane as leverage to get a good offer at Arizona.

Leach has called Tulane twice apparently asking about the job. His main reasons seem to be playing in the Superdome, getting to recruit in Louisiana, and going to a strong academic ins ution. However, Tulane hasn't offered him anything yet and appear stupid enough to pass him over. Also, they're focusing on building a 25K stadium instead of staying in the Superdome which Tommy Bowden and Mack Brown said in the past was a big recruiting tool.

I think RichRod will do ok at Arizona. Go to bowl games every year, starting in his 2nd season. Question is will he be able to recruit good enough to challenge for a Pac-12 championship. He's a excellent offensive coach, but he needs a strong hire to run the defense.

I told DoK about him re-emerging as a candidate over the weekend. Sucks. I'm not as concerned about product as DoK, but I'm not really in favor of the hire. I think his offense will be just fine, and with some of the current talent for next year, maybe even a smoother transition as senior QB Matt Scott is a dual threat and was a recruit of Rodriguez while at Michigan, and current freshman RB Ka'deem Carey is very talented. Factor in some quality wideout depth and offense should be solid.

My concerns are his atrocious defense, and whether or not he's learned enough to bring in talented guys with know-how and leave well enough alone, or if he's still got force the hire into his "preferred" POS 3-3-5 scheme. I wanted Mike Lupoi of Cal for a while now, and he's supposedly still a possibility for DC. If he's brought in, that's a solid start to making the defense impacting.

Another concern is west coast recruiting. Will his Florida/DC recruiting ties work to Arizona? If not, as I suspect to a large degree, he'll need to make a splash with his coordinators and not rely on his familiar retreads. I wanted this head coach to be a dominant recruiter above all else. Rodriguez is solid, but I'm not really happy.

Lastly, I don't really like what I know of Rich Rodriguez the person. I don't care for his demeanor, and after Stoops, I had really hoped for a removal off the hothead coach. I'm concerned of his ability to both sell and represent the brand that is in desperate need of reclamation. Furthermore, he's already proven himself untrustworthy as a person, crawfishing on a freshly-signed extension with West Virginia and bolting for Michigan before the bowl game only months after seriously listening to Alabama. He doesn't seem committed and is always starry-eyed for bigger, better, greener, so how long is he here, should he have success?

I'm not concerned about the NCAA violations, least not for the violations themselves, as they were for excessive practice and not for recruiting, academics or eligibility issues, but I s'pose I should be concerned about the stupidity that would lead to an already under-the-microscope coach to not have full control within compliance. That can manifest itself in other ways.

All told, I'm not happy, but I'm not angry... least not like DoK. I don't wish we had Stoops back. I'm thrilled he's gone.

If Rodriguez brings in the right staff this is a solid double hire. Not the homerun that I believe Petersen or, even, Sumlin would have been. Without the right staff, it's a concerning hire and a letdown.

RichRod will look to leave for greener pastures. WVU was his dream job and he did stay for years, but it wasn't good enough in the end as he left for Michigan. He definitely needs to hire a good defensive coordinator. That was his downfall at Michigan. Also, he's been in the East coast his whole career with the exception of his two years at Tulane. I don't think he has any connections in the West Coast. I think he can get some recruits from Texas, but how will he do in California? I'm sure he will get 8 wins a year at least, but will he be able to compete for a Pac-12 championship?

Pac-12 Championships? No. But if he can compete for 2nd place on occasion, be in position for a Rose Bowl bid should the Pac-12 Champion get the BCS nod, then he'll be their greatest coach ever.

I don't anticipate that, but I do think he can reach and sustain the 8/9-wins that the team peaks at with Stoops and have the occasional 10-win, top-4-Pac-12 team, especially in the down Pac-12 South. It's really USC and a bunch of slackers.

If Rod leaves after 8 years, I'm not concerned. If he leaves before, it'll suck. I anticipate within 4 years, though, which is why I don't care for the hire.

He will have one 9 win season in five years and then be fired.

Kinda like the path were going down right now.

I predict he will have some 8 win seasons and then after getting a 10 win season will leave for Florida after Muschamp gets fired.

That's exactly what I said a week ago on another site with this first started getting talked about. I see this happening within four years. He always prioritized Florida for recruiting, even if he didn't get the best recruits the state offered.

He's not long for Arizona. I also have a nagging su ion that Arizona Athletic Director Greg Byrne, an Arizona State alum, may have his eyes on filling the likely opening of the same position at ASU after Lisa Love is fired. If so, I'm highly su ious of this search... almost like he might be saving Petersen for Arizona State, and setting up Arizona, it's rival, for likely impending turmoil when RichRod deserts Arizona for greener pastures.

Paranoid, yes, but I'd been hearing some positive things on Petersen recently, that he is open, and with Byrne's prior relationship with Petersen, that Arizona was in a good spot. I also liked the prospect of Belotti with a succession plan of Wilcox and/or Lupoi going forward.

I get the nagging feeling the sly hand of sabotage is moving and it bears the mark of the s mies!

rod couldn't get a state of the art program in a BCS conference more than 7 wins.

he won't be able to get a mediocre rebuilding program in a BCS conference more than 6 wins.

    Simple logic here.

Rich Rod leaving Arizona for a better job isn't a hypothetical that's worth discussion. He'll be fired by Greg Byrne's replacement before he's offered a better job. People act like him rebuilding Arizona and getting his name out their as a sexy hire at a big school is a sure thing when it's far from it. What big school would wanna hire him after his abortion at Michigan?
