During the Spurs 4 Championship seasons..Offense averaged 106.6 PPG Defense gave up 98.35 PPG...an 8.25 diff...last four seasons defense has allowed over 100 PPG including over 105 last year..I mean..it doesnt take a genius to know defense is the issue.

Crystallizing stuff. If there was ever any wonder about why team success has declined, there is the evidence. By the way, this evidence also parallels the decline of the once-great, future HOF Tim Duncan, not to mention the decline and ulimate departure of the perennial all-defensive ace, Bruce Bowen.

I just wonder how many points the Grizzlies averaged per game, when the waxed the Spurs asses during that playoff series upset?

Looks convincing on the surface, but the real tell is point spread. Don't just take the championship years, go back and look at all the years they didn't win and then you will get a better idea how the stats indicate successes. They didn't win 4 in a row, so what of those in between seasons?

In 2002, for example, the Spurs allowed just above 90 points a game. They didn't win the championship.

In fact, there are a number of years that the Spurs had great defense and didn't win the championship.

The problem now is that we don't have defenders, not that we don't have defense. It's also that we don't have a real low post presence, so we cannot really slow the game down except to move the ball around the circle and maybe get it inside from time to time. We play faster now. That's going to mean more points. If we had a young Tim Duncan and a healthy David Robinson, we could get back to those low numbers, but we don't. We don't have a "more defense" button.

Huh? The Spurs defense was bad last year but they didn't give up 105 PPG

I assume your numbers are actually per 100 possessions.

Yeah, it was actually 98, but I think he's talking about one game, or not. It's a confusing post tbh.

I couldn't find "imortant" in my thesaurus, but it obviously is a synonym for "incorrect".

It's not just the defensive numbers but in the playoffs it really comes down to matchups. You need a team and individual defense that can handle the best teams. In early 2000's they couldn't match up with Kobe/Shaq. In '06 it was JH and Dirk. You may be able to handle most of the teams but if you can't handle the best you can't win.

In '06 it was Rasho and Nazr. They were on the bench.
