    Spurs Waive Hassell and Zeller
    Dec. 24, 2011
SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have waived forward Frank Hassell and center Luke Zeller.

Hassell appeared in two preseason games, averaging 2.0 points and 1.5 rebounds in 10.0 minutes.

Zeller saw four minutes of action vs. Houston on Dec. 21 handing out two assists.

The roster now stands at 13.

The Spurs tip off the preseason on Monday, Dec. 26 when they host the Memphis Grizzlies at the AT&T Center at 7:30 p.m.

Expected. Neither is anything close to NBA caliber right now.

Now that the Spurs are at 13, it'll be interesting to see whether they stay at that number for the rest of the season. Doing so makes sense financially since the Spurs will have to pay luxury tax on any additional players. However, with the condensed season ahead, it'd be risky not to have at least one other option to turn to in case of injuries.

None of the big 3 (Lawal, Zeller, and Hassel) were going to be big time contributors.. still a little surprised that all 3 were waived because we need some injury insurance/practice bodies.

We can always call up a D-league allstar or hope to pick up a veteran big man during the season.

It's almost like last season when Spurs went through so many backup SF's but never made a decision. RJ never got a backup and someone to push him in practice and for playing time.

It's amazing how good you have to be to make a team roster. Those waived were probably their HS legends, college greats and home town heros, but could not make the cut in the pros.

Guys I just got a call yesterday from RC and it looks like I'm going to be the backup center. I'm 6'4, about 190, play decent defense against my friends, and I'm fearless when it comes to shooting the three ball (sometimes I even make one.) I've played at the elementary school level ball in a Texas league. You guys can just call me Big Tex.
