As I've been saying, the W.H. never stated whether they thought the memo's were authentic or not. If they could fool the W.H. why can't they fool CBS News?

It was 11 a.m. on Sept. 8 — nine hours before "60 Minutes" was to air. But as news executives debated whether to broadcast a story on newly obtained paperwork offering fresh evidence about President Bush's National Guard service, a big question hung over CBS News' Westside headquarters: Were the photocopied do ents real or fake?

Suddenly, the answer seemed to materialize, and from an unlikely source — the White House itself.

John Roberts, the network's White House correspondent, called to report he'd just completed an on-camera interview with Dan Bartlett, the White House communications director. Bartlett, it appeared, had no quarrel with the authenticity of the do ents.

That was the turning point.

"If we had gotten back from the White House any kind of red flag, raised eyebrow, anything that said, 'Are you sure about this stuff?' we would have gone back to square one," Josh Howard, the program's executive producer, told the Los Angeles Times in an interview Friday. "The White House said they were authentic, and that carried a lot of weight with us."

The White House never examined them. The White House had absolutely no clue as to their provenance. Under a committment, made by President Bush, of full disclosure, they turned around and gave them to the press.

I think you overestimate the White House's and the general public's interest in this matter.

This whole thing is starting to smell like another Rove maneuver to try and keep voters and the press from talking about real issues and try and make CBS and Dan Rather look bad in the process. I mean this is a guy who once bugged his own office once to take the heat off a debate. Rove has managed to hijack this election with Republican catch phrases that say nothing about W's position on important issues like Iraq, and the public just keeps eating it all up egged on by Republican media pundits. It would be laughable if it wasn't so tragic for the future of the country.
