Cool, he's close to getting some playing time.
The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have assigned Gary Neal to the Austin Toros of the NBA Development League for a medical rehab assignment. Neal underwent an appendectomy on December 12, 2011.
Neal enjoyed a successful rookie campaign during the 2010-11 season. He averaged 9.8 points and 2.5 rebounds in 21.1 minutes in 80 games. He led all rookies in three-point field goal percentage, posting a .419 mark, and earned a spot on the 2011 All-Rookie First Team.
Neal will practice with the Toros on Monday and Tuesday of this week and then be re-evaluated by team doctors. At that point, a timeline for his return will be determined.

After he starts making them rain there he'll be back. JA better up his 3 % or he may loose his minutes to him...
JA pisses me off. The guy is so damn athletic, but can't seem to hit the broad side of a barn.
Yea i know what you mean. a full offseason and training camp working with the shooting coach will do wonders for him , but Still he brings so much energy off the bench.
I would hate to see JA lose his minutes, but its out of him and TJ. And TJ brings something a little more different so Pop could very well stick with him when Neal comes back and bench JA.
Hopefully im wrong.
I honestly hope Pop continues to play JA and gives TJ's minutes to Neal. I don't think he will, but that gives us more talent and defense out there on any given night.
JA is backing up rj and Neal will be backing up the sg spot, so I don't think he will be taking to many of his minutes, they will probably be playing together most of the time.
Cory Joseph is the one who is going to lose out on pt....say o to the Toros Cory!
Yes, TJ brings more turnovers while JA misses more shots. Although TP and Manu have made some pretty bad to's early in the season also. Hopefully, TJ improves with more time in the system. But I'd hate for it to be at the expense of JA.
The off season having been so long... i forgot how damn productive Gary Neal was as a rookie. Almost 10ppg in just 21mpg on 42% from 3. Cant wait to have him back.![]()
For a second I thought the Toros were going to make their first positive impact in their history. But it looks like Neal is just going to practice there and not even play.
Close, but I guess we're still waiting for the Toros to do something worthwhile after all these years.
Good idea since Neal can practice and be evaluated without all the craziness of this season's NBA schedule. Toros play Thursday and Friday at home so his playing for them isn't totally out of the question.
They developed Ian for the Mavs, that's already something.
This is the 1st time a recal a major rotation player the previous year being relegated to the Toros.
Correct me if I'm wrong did guys like RMJ , Kerr, etc ever spend time in the Toros
I wouldn't call it a relegation. He'll be back with the Spurs as soon as he's healthy enough.
I don't think longtime vets can be sent to the D league. I believe a player can have no more than a couple years in the NBA and still be eligible to be sent down.
