former #13 pick with a 7'2" wingspan - maybe a chance for a small ball role if Spurs can't get a big (if he impresses while with the toros)

'As far as D-League prospects go, Julian Wright is pretty damn good. Once upon a time he looked like a decent prospect and is still young enough to have some upside.

Is this the former Kansas jayhawk? This guys a typical ku athlete if he's who I think he is. And that's definitely not a bad thing. if he chasm shoot greater than twenty percent from three he's already an upgrade over Anderson

Much better prospect than what we usually see in the D-League. If he gets it all figured out he could wind up a nice bench player.

The problem with Wright is that I don't know what you do with him. He played PF at Kansas, but he's like 6'6" without shoes, and unless he's bulked up about 225 lbs. He can't be a PF in the NBA, but he doesn't have SF skills.

Take Richard Jefferson, make him a slightly better defender, but take away his shooting ability - that's Julian Wright. Both were the 13th pick of the draft. (Supers ious, anyone?) But Jefferson's scoring ability has kept him on the court.

My opinion, Wright is one of those guys whose game is suited to college ball. Even if he gets more playing time in the D-League and improves his overall game, it's hard to find where he fits on an NBA squad. His best bet, IMO, is to really work on becoming a top-notch defender. He's athletic, and might be quick enough to do that.

Wright is 6'8 with shoes (nobody plays basketball barefoot, sorry) and has a 7'2 arm span..http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Julian-Wright-275/

We already have a 6'8" player with a "freakish" 7'2" wingspan, Kwahi Leonard.

Do we really need another 'freak' instead of a legitimate big man?

Nobody plays pro ball barefoot? No kidding? You ing tool.

So you completely ignored the point - that he doesn't have PF size, or SF skills? Nice pickup on the shoe thing, though. You're like the Moneyball guy of the NBA.

That's a high quality pick up for a D-League team.

If he does well with the Toros, he has a good chance of ending the season with Spurs. Spurs have only 13 players under contract and he could be even 12 after salary dumping JA. In late march or April, I expect Spurs to fill up that roster to end up with 15 players. Signing a player for the rest of the season that late in the year is cheap. Spurs will have a crazy schedule and Pop should tank a lot of games.

Well, I guess you do but most do not so why list it....Everyone knows Wright is a tweener and has known since he declared for the draft some years ago so thanks for pointing this out to everyone. The guy is simply in Austin, so why the are you ing about the spurs needs with him..AUSTIN

Great pick-up for the Toros. Hopefully he can make it back to the bigs, be it with the Spurs or otherwise.

Damn, I like the signing. He would make a good 4th/5th big for the Spurs if he plays well enough to end up on the team....

At the combine they ALWAYS measure players both with and without shoes. Players (and agents) try to play all kinds of stupid games with the shoes, to make a guy look taller than he is. A lot of people pay more attention to the measurement without shoes, because that number doesn't lie. Whether you like it or not, he's an inch shorter than Richard Jefferson. The measurement without shoes puts everyone on equal footing - no pun intended.

Obviously "everyone" doesn't know he's a tweener, based on the comments. And some are speculating about him being on the Spurs' roster as a result of playing for the Toros. Just read the thread. I know you want to distract from sounding like a tool, but the fact is this thread is all about the possibility of him being a Spur.

I'll give my prediction, and if I'm wrong I'll be glad to admit it. I think he'll do much better in the D-League, more like he did in college ball. But if he does ever get another call-up to the NBA, it will be just like the first time he was there. He's too small to cover 4's in the league, and not quick enough to cover 2's, so he's not going to be versatile as a defender. He's not known to be much of a shooter. And while he got a lot of points in the paint in college, he couldn't do it in the NBA.

Oh... and you want to know why I compared him to RJ? Let's look at the combine measurements:
    Height With Shoes:...RJ - 6'8.5"....Wright - 6'8.5"
    Height W/O Shoes:...RJ - 6"7.5""....Wright - 6'6.5" (weird, huh?)
    Standing Vert:.........RJ - 33"".......Wright - 28.5"
    Max Vert:...............RJ - 38.5""......Wright - 33.5"
    Bench Press (reps):..RJ - 14........Wright - 2
    Lane Agility:............RJ - 11.19"....Wright 11.48
    3/4 court sprint:......RJ - 3.15".......Wright 3.36

He's a smaller, slower, weaker, less agile version of RJ... without the shooting ability. But other than that, hey, he's perfect for us. And if you weren't so focused on being a , you might have learned something. I don't care how high he went in the draft, he's a failed experiment. And he's not a big - not even a fifth big. If you're really, really excited about what he will bring to the Toros, rock on.

Oh Julian. Had high hopes for him. Had a good rookie season. Regressed after that. Doesn't love the game. Wants to be in the music industry. His jumpshot worsened each season with the Hornets. Had no work ethic. Hopefully he snaps out of it. I always liked him.

As if RJ could still put up #s anywhere close to what he did in the combine...
