for the CoM, this would only happen in a parallel universe.

recently, i started talking to a friend of mine abut the scenario of this trade and looked at some pros and cons. i don't want to write a whole novel here, so i invite you guys to chime in this fic ious trade merely for conversation purposes - i don't worship tony, i don't hate manu, but i like to make up random trades and discuss them.

    trade setting - base:
    1. the spurs send manu ginobili, a 1st round pick to por
    2. por sends LaMarcus Aldridge to the spurs
    ============
    variations:
    3. (e.g.) the spurs send neal and a 2nd round pick to a team in need of SGs (if this had happened this season - e.g. clippers or bulls) in exchange for a 1st round pick that they send to por
    - any other ways of getting a 1st round pick from someone else

consider that this deal is done before the beginning of the next season. portland just parked a tank over the reset button - they know they will suck for 3-4 years before getting better. they only have LA as the only player capable to start for a championship team, and he is unlikely to be pleased with playing for one of the weakest teams in the nba - while he is in his prime. por may be tempted to move his so that they could tank easier and have a better draft position.

if it makes you feel better, you may add blair to the trade to portland.

this trade would change the spurs significantly - they would essentially trade their advantage on the wings for an advantage in the paint: duncan-aldridge-splitter. the spurs could play kawhi and green (36 min/game) and stephen jackson (28 min/game), although they would probably look to acquire a true backup SG if step 3 involves dealing neal for the pick.

    what do you guys think?

heck, I approve of that trade if they can pull it off... POR isn't letting go of Aldridge though, at least not for Manu.

That's a no-brainer. Aldridge is eight years young, already an All-Star and would solve a lot of problems with the current composition of the roster. Manu is awesome but you'd have to be smoking something nasty to not instantly take that trade.

Portland is not interested in dumping LA.

Even if they were, they could do much better than Manu plus late first rounders.

This thread has to be a joke.

It's almost offensive to Portland fans to even suggest something as ludicrous as this.

i read the article. if POR thinks that this strategy will land them the talent to compete for a championship, i would laugh in their faces. they have to keep LA for now in order to sell tickets (just like the suns with nash). they need a star for the season ticket-holder brochure.

the mention of d-will is hilarious; everyone knows he's going to dallas.

The point of the article is that they intend to build around LA. They would not have any interest in anything like the trade you suggest.

I would love it of course. Portland would hang up the moment they hear "for Manu Ginobili".

And I know the OP isn't serious.

No brainer? Really? Sorry, I guess I believe in loyalty for a guy that has accomplished so much for the team. I probably would not be a Spur's fan today if it wasn't for Manu. He will retire as Spur, as will Duncan. I don't care who would want to trade for him. Sure, it probably doesn't make the most basketball sense but oh well.

Portland's owner is rich as . He could float the team himself for 10 years.

if you were LA, would you stay 3 years while this team tanks in order to get good picks, while you are in your prime? maybe - if you like portland a lot.

btw, for those thinking that the blazers can retool on the go, without tanking, you must be smoking something b/c:

    1. houston has been doing it for a long time - and they failed - and they have a better GM / ownership; it's never been done before (go ahead and do your research)

    2. portland is not a big market to attract free agents

    3. lamarcus aldridge is good - all-star this year - but he is not mvp material to attract other ppl (e.g. lebron, duncan)

i think the consensus is that portland is not getting enough in ginobili, blair + two 1st rounders; also, i doubt that the spurs would add another 1st rounder (of their own) to sweeten the deal. moreover, the blazers would probably send lamarcus out of the western conference - if they wanted to get rid of him, so the trade is highly unlikely (not debating that fact), but i would do it.

Portland's tank is probably be intended to be a summer rebuilding job. Getting 2 lottery picks, plus having free agency money to attract someone/multiple people.

    FA
    Aldridge
    Batum
    Mathews
    FA
    Portland lottery pick
    NJN Lottery pick

    is a good core.

When is LA a free agent? Spurs make a run at him to bring him back to Texas?
