Here in Houston, I am a rather ostentatious Spurs fan. Lately, I've been getting a lot of "well-wishing" from people who say they want to see the Spurs beat "that bunch of thugs" from Detroit.
When I ask them to specify which Pistons players they think are thugs, they're kind of left speechless for a moment, then stammer something about "that wild-looking guy with the Afro."
I then explain that his name is Ben Wallace, and that his off-court activity mostly consists of going home to his wife and flipping burgers on the grill for his kids while they play. I ask them what makes them think he's a thug.
"Oh, ah -- well, uh... he just looks... uh, well I think he's a thug, OK?"

Nah, I know what these people mean. They don't like the way he looks, and they don't want to hear what he's really like, because they have their image of a scary black man to hate, and they don't want it challenged. They don't want to humanize him.

I'm a Spurs fan, and I want them to win the Championship, but that doesn't keep me from liking the Pistons or Ben Wallace.
I have huge respect and liking for Ben Wallace. I love his game AND I love his fro. I wish Tim would grow one, or at least some dreadlocks.

Actually, Big Ben answered every question that was thrown at him. Even all the ones about his hair that seemed to annoy him pretty damn much.
