With all this Tom Cruise/Katie Holmes nonsense, and all the talk about his religion, I realized I don't know what the scientology is. They talk like he's crazy, so what is it about? Does anyone know generally what their beliefs are?

Starwars and Star Trek.
You basically believe in those types of fictious universes and that someday Aliens will take away the scientologists to a better world.
My Uncle is a scientologist. It;s weird. And he is weird now too.
they don't think that you should speak or make any sound in the presence of someone who is sleeping, napping or otherwise not fully conscious because you could plant and enfart in thier brain and permantly harm their mental well being.
Also they don't believe in phsyciatry or drugs (prescribed). Or teacher led educatioon apparently since my Uncle put his kids in some freaky scientology based primary school where they played with clay till they were 8 and my cousin Jeremiah didn't learn to read till he was 10.
My Uncle got involved with them while he was at Berkley in the mid 70's studying Neurology... he became heavily indebted to the church of scientology (thier fees are outrageous) and then ended up compoundeding that initial error by accepting loans from them. He tried to leave the church cause they are weird... but ended up quittign college and working for them to pay off his debt.
Meanwhile he has since become a "true-believer" and owes them more $$ than ever.

It all started with this, which is basically a Science Fiction book. How it esculated into a cult (and I use that term loosely) is beyond me.
Isn't it true that in the Mind 50's L.Ron Hubbard made a bet with a fellow sci-fi writer that he could "create a religion"???
Part of their belief is that human souls are 75 million year old aliens called Thetans. We're polluted with these negative energies called emgrams and so they use the pop psychology techniques of Dianetics coupled with a device similiar to a lie detector to supposedly get you "clear" of these emgrams. So along the way you pay outrageous fees to get "clear", and as well, you divulge all your dirty laundry to these folks as well. (Can you say "blackmail"? Sure you can.)
It's a scam from the start.
That's the legend, Obi... everybody denies it, but it seems very plausible.

Hey Tpark, there's no call for that... Duff's unfounded and ignorant antagonism for tradtional religion is well known here, but there's no need to be impolite. As he grows older and hopefully gains a little wisdom, he'll see the error of his ways.
One of my best friend's daughter started at Berkeley last year. Some of the things that go on there qualify for admission to the nearest looney bin, for sure. Fortunately, she's found some oases of sanity there and should survive the craziness enough to get a great education there.
You need like a 4.0+ GPA to get in there, good extra-curriuclar(sp) and goood SATI/II/ACT scores.

Dude, just cause they're some wackos that around doesn't mean it's a bad school. Berkley was the in Physics/Chemistry/Science. The mofos were making Brand NEW elements from scratch, no one does that except maybe for God..... and the people there have obviously won numerous Nobel Prizes in the different fields fo Science.
Berkeley is where a professor was holding a rally trying to convince students that they should try to protect the Iraqis fighting against our troops, and basically to go after the Americans. Hmmm.
(There's a difference between opposing the war and opposing the troops serving our country...you can't think this guy wasn't insane no matter what your political views.)
WTF!? I'm not talking about the Schools relation in poltics or frat parties or Druggies. The only reason I want to go there is to get a good education.
Also the place where they demanded the Fire Dept take down their american flag, because it might "offend" someone.
