On the topic of the national anthem...

I noticed that the singer in Detroit game 5 did not sing the national anthem but America the Beautiful (not sure if this is the correct le). What's up with that? I thought there's only one USA anthem? Isn't the national anthem an obligatory part of the pre-game ceremony?

you know i was saying the same thing.
since when is it kosher to forgo the national anthem in favor of some other song??
In my view, if they were gonna skip the real national anthem, they should've had kid rock sing "america, yeah!'.. .that song is more his style.

yes, heaven forbid we have some of our military folks, in a city with a heavy military influence, be allowed to sing the national anthem.

America the Beautiful is a lot easier song for a no-talent piece of crap like Kid Rock to sing. He would have embarrased himself 10x worse on the Star Spangled Banner.

I thought the National Anthem was classy, well done, and totally appropriate. total class act after Kiddy Rocks bull .

If you need every single thing in the pregame show to be over the top to get "excited" about the game then you need to quit watching basketball and switch to WWF wrestling.

any nations national anthem sounds a whole lot better when the whole crowd gets in on the act and sings along with the performer, when going to high school football games in oklahoma ( i lived there nine months while on foreign exchange ) i noticed that only the performer sang the anthem, in new zealand it is totally normal for the crowd to get in and sing the nations national anthem,
    what do americans do?

There is only one National Anthem, but if you're rich and talentless enough, they will let you get away with singing "America the Beautiful". It's not the same thing though, no. They should have found someone who could sing the National Anthem and done it the right way instead of going for the big name entertainer.

our national anthem is freakin HARD to sing.
Even for trained pros. the notes are all over the place on that sucker.
A crowd singing along would be enough to make the whole country go deaf.

I was just about to say the same thing. From a practical standpoint FS Keys "Star Spangled Banner" was an awful choice by Congress to be the national anthem...it spans four octaves and is a real stretch for even professionally trained vocalists...and is routinely butchered by so called "professional" entertainers...

It's not a law or something...

The tradition of singing a patriotic song at assemblies and sporting events started in WWI, and kept going after the war. The national anthem gets sung 95% of the time, but America the Beautiful gets sung once in a while, and I've even heard the Battlehymn of the Republic Once, but not in Texas.

And a lot of people do sing along to the national anthem. And if you're a Texas Aggie, you get to sing along to Texas, Our Texas! at our games (we have our own NATIONAL anthem in Texas).

Actually, this confused me as well. The Star-Spangled Banner is the national anthem, but several years ago, Ray Charles started pe ioning to have it changed to America the Beautiful. He likes to sing it before games, but if memory serves correctly, even when he sings America the Beautiful, the national anthem is still performed by someone else. I have no idea why we didn't get a proper performance Sunday night, except that, as already noted, Kid Rock can't sing and the national anthem is difficult to sing (big range and big jumps).

On a side note, I'm a singer and one of my pet peeves is when people cheat and make the first syllable in "banner" (toward the end)two steps. Yeah, it's a big slide/jump, but if you've had any vocal training at all, you should be able to do it. Grr!

in new zealand it is totally normal for the crowd to get in and sing the nations national anthem,
I think at smaller events like high school games, the crowd sings along, but when you're at a big-time thing and the performer is someone famous, usually the crowd wants to hear the singer.
