His last stint was with the Charlotte Bobcats, so going from the Bobcats to SMU isn't that much of a downgrade. Either way, if he's interested in coaching college again I'm surprised he's not getting a better offer. He's prolly too old fashion to be much of a recruiter these days, but he's one of the best on court coaches at the college or professional level.
