Bruno in an another thread pointed to how in the last month or so, the Spurs had rested its players far better than any other playoff contending team.

Here is an assessment of the minute spreading/resting business that the Spurs have come to perfect -

Spread of minutes per game among players in all teams (Data till 22nd April), sorted by lowest number of players playing most minutes (above 30) asc-

    Code:
    Team	1-11	11-21	21-31	31-41	Grand Total
    cha 7	8	1	16
    san	6	5	8	1	20
    was	3	7	10	1	21
    chi	3	3	6	2	14
    dal	5	4	5	2	16
    gsw	5	6	7	2	20
    ind	3	5	5	2	15

    cle	2	8	7	3	20

    atl	4	5	3	4	16
    bos	4	5	3	5	17
    por	5	5	3	5	18
Narrowing down the above for playoff bound teams only -

    Code:
    Team	1-11	11-21	21-31	31-41	Grand Total
    san	6	5	8	1	20
    chi	3	3	6	2	14

Maximum minutes (Maxm/g) played and average of minutes (avm/g) played for playoff bound teams -

    Code:
    Team	Players	Maxm/g	Avm/g
    san	20	32.2	18.1
    mem	17	37.4	18.3
    okl	16	38.7	18.9
    dal	16	33	18.9
    mia	16	37.5	19.2
    phi	15	35.6	19.3
    bos	17	37.1	19.5
    lac	18	36.3	19.6
    ind	15	33.3	19.6
    orl	16	38.3	19.6
    atl	16	35.7	20.2
    uta	15	34.3	20.3
    lal	16	38.5	20.7
    chi	14	39.6	21.7
    nyk	16	34.2	21.7
    den	17	35	21.7
    Total 39.6	19.8
The above data for players who have started atleast 20% of the games -

    Code:
    Team	Players	Maxm/g	Avm/g
    phi	9	35.6	23.9
    san	8	32.2	25.2
    den	10	35	25.3
    uta	8	34.3	26.1
    mia	7	37.5	26.5
    nyk	9	34.2	26.9
    dal	6	33	27.0
    okl	6	38.7	27.9
    atl	8	35.7	28.3
    lal	8	38.5	29.1
    chi	7	39.6	29.8
    orl	7	38.3	30.2
    bos	7	37.1	30.5
    ind	5	33.3	30.7
    mem	6	37.4	30.8
    lac	6	36.3	30.9
    Total 39.6	27.8
The takeaway is that the Spurs have played only one player above 30 minutes per game - in Tony Parker and have spread minutes across a number of players. It is also the playoff bound team with the lowest average minutes played by each player and second in the list for starters with the lowest average minutes played.

The last table for starters is most important. It shows how much the best players (who mostly start) are utilised by most teams. Memphis for example spreads its minutes pretty well, but starters still get to play a lot of minutes. Only Philadelphia's starters play less per game as compared to the Spurs..and it is amazing that the Spurs are tied for No 1 in the league with such minute distribution.

Kudos to Popovich and his coaching staff for achieving this much success in the regular season and for trying to keep his players fresh at the same time.

    Nice work.

Something that these stats doesn't show are games where a player got a DNP for rest reasons. For example, Duncan has missed 6 games for rest reasons.

A really simple stat to show how Pop has been able to manage minutes: Spurs don't have a single player in the top50 of minutes played this year. They have only one in the top100 with Parker at the 52nd spot.

You are right.. but it is necessary to see how the rest of the team who did not get too many DNPs were played and the above data gives a representation of that.

Point is.. even with Duncan sitting close to 4 games, Parker about 2 and Manu many many more because of injury.. the rest of the team and the big 3 have had low minutes/game compared to their counterparts in other teams.
