Superman isn't scary.
To some, any roller coaster is a scary roller coaster. But to the brave at heart, the faster they come, the bigger they smile.
Does that sound like you? Do you laugh in the face of 300-foot drops, four Gs of acceleration, or top speeds north of 100 miles per hour? If so, then you might want to plan a road trip to check out this collection of America's biggest, fastest, tallest, and all-out craziest coasters.
Kingda Ka, Six Flags Great Adventure, Jackson, NJ
Towering over the New Jersey landscape, Kingda Ka is the world's tallest roller coaster -- and when it opened in 2004, it was the world's fastest, too. The jungle-themed ride uses a hydraulic mechanism to rocket riders to speeds in excess of a hair-raising 130 miles per hour in just 3.5 seconds. If that's enough to make your stomach churn, look away now: next up for Kingda Ka's intrepid riders is a 456-foot, near-vertical, twisting climb…and a corresponding plummet down the far side. The fun's all over in under half a minute, but trust us, it feels like forever.
El Toro, Six Flags Great Adventure, Jackson, NJ
Once you've recovered from Kingda Ka, simply turn around and stare your next challenge in its rickety wooden eyes — the terrifying El Toro is right next door. Whereas Kingda Ka is all glossy steel, high-tech and gleaming, El Toro is built out of old bits of dead tree. Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course: some of history's greatest rollercoasters are made of wood. Most of them, however, are smaller, slower, and a fair share mellower than this rocking, rollicking beast. El Toro's towering 188-foot crest makes it the third tallest wooden roller coaster in the world.
Intimidator 305, Kings Dominion, Doswell, VA
Named in memory of racing legend Dale Earnhardt, the Intimidator doesn't quite reach the pace of a NASCAR race, but with a top speed of around 90 mph, it's not too far off. It boasts no fewer than five hills so sharp you'll be weightless as you hurtle over them -- one, indeed, had to be toned down last year after riders complained it was causing them to lose consciousness. Completed in 2010 at a total cost of around $25 million, its 300-foot drop is one of the largest in the world.
Big Shot, Stratosphere Hotel, Las Vegas, NV
On paper, Big Shot isn't all that impressive in this company. With a top speed of about 45 mph, it's not particularly fast, and its simple up-and-down path covers a modest 160 vertical feet. But as your friendly neighborhood realtor will tell you, location is everything -- and the Big Shot happens to be perched atop the tallest structure in Las Vegas, the hundred-storey Stratosphere hotel. So while you're being slung up its steel track at an acceleration of over four Gs, your feet are dangling in mid-air above the immeasurable glitz and glamor of the Strip. Over one thousand feet above it, to be exact. Gulp. Word to the wise: save your visit to Stratosphere's extensive dining facilities for after the ride.
Superman: Krypton Coaster, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, San Antonio, TX
You don't need to be the Man of Steel to ride this coaster. Nerves of steel would not go amiss, however. Appropriately, it's a floorless ride, slinging you over 50 yards into the skies over Texas, with your legs dangling merrily in the breeze. Along the way you'll take in no fewer than six inversions, not to mention a turn around the world's largest complete vertical loop. And although its 70 mph top speed is not quite faster than a speeding bullet, you'll find it's plenty fast enough.

What are some of the best roller coasters that you have been on?
except when people DIED on it
Yeah, I didn't think so either. It's my favorite ride at Fiesta Texas though.
Someone died on the Superman?
Yeah, it's not scary at all tbh. It's my favorite one to ride at Fiesta Texas, easily.
The Big Shot in Vegas looks intense though. I don't know about being up that high.![]()
Cable broke I believe.
I know those are all scary roller costars but at lest they are engineered to state of the art standards…The old wooden roller costars are freighting…Magic Mountain Valencia California built an all wooden roller coaster called Colossus in 1978… At the time the fastest, largest dual-tracked wooden coaster ever... Following its first season, it was closed and extensively redone…Fat people could be hurled from the thing & the track was so awful your teeth chattered…They had to make it safer & have people walk it each morning to replace broken & cracked boards…But year one, it was a horrible experience to ride that thing…![]()
lmao at Superman AND that ty wooden one. They just had to have a wooden one for the list and they just picked out of a hat. I'd take The an over any in Fiesta Texas (though Fiesta Texas is easily a better park)
That one in Vegas is no joke. You're already a mile high in the hotel and they take you even farther. Except there's also a ride that takes you OVER the ledge and spins you around. I didn't ride any but that one looked 5x scarier
That one is funny, because you think the acceleration going up is going to get you, but that part is quite tame. The seconds of free falling afterwards are the scary part, because of the feeling of weightlessness you don't feel the seat pushing against your butt. You're free-falling and because the harness have you pined back in the seat you can't look down enough to see the tower just the ground some 350 meters below!
Was really good!
Once the guy next to me screamed like a girl during the whole thing![]()
There's this drag racer one in Ohio I rode way back in the day that did 120 MPH and was 420 feet high .. definitely the scariest I ever rode besides that park's "scream" rendition which just takes you up, hangs you there and suddenly drops you, but from like 300+ ft..
I just rode Superman today with my 2 daughters (10/13) and they both said it was eh, no line and they pass on going again. I went on the one at Vegas that goes over the side and then drops down. I wanted to do all 3 but the other 2 were closed due to wind.
Millennium Force
Cedar Point
Tatsu
Magic Mountain
an
Six Flags Over Texas
Six Flags over Texas rapes Fiesta Texas tbh
Over Texas>>>>>>fiesta Texas
an is fun as and an amazing ride but I wouldn't consider it "scary" besides the first time. Anyone been on the new metal Texas giant yet? The wood one was meh but apparently they changed the drop angle and it's almost 90 degrees now.
Going tomorrow with some buds of mine.
for people saying Over Texas > Fiesta Texas, did Over Texas suddenly get a water park that I'm not aware of?
Who the cares about water parks? And there's always hurricane harbor across the street
If you want a water park go to Schlitterbahn.
I haven't been to Over Texas in about 13 years. I want to make a trip up there this summer.
lmao seeing as how they're always jammed packed I'd say most people that care about amusement parks would care about water parks.
And across the street? You mean that one thing called I-30? That's a convenient little walk
I've been to a load of Six Flags. I'm kind of bored of roller coasters now. I lost some change on that Superman one.
And wooden roller coasters hurt like a mother er. The constant rattling is annoying.
this
imo anyone who says they enjoy wooden coasters are ing full of it. They're slower, uncomfortable, can't do flips (I may be wrong but at least most don't), and for the most part they're not as high
the only reason anyone should ride them is because the lines on the steel coasters are too long
sensitive be@ner getting defensive over Six Flags
I took a group of friends to Schlitterbahn, and I was so hyped up. The slides like the Master Blaster were meh. It was so much funner when I was a kid. Wave pool is still awesome though.
I'm pretty much at the stage where tubing and drinking is my definition of a good time in a water park.
The fresh water part is best imo. The hour long wait for a 40 second slide are not.
