It depends. Is he signing somewhere else for more? Honestly, Boston isn't like LA or Miami, places where NBA players want to live because there's lots of hot es and nice weather all the time. Players come to Boston because of one of three things right now: 1) chance to ring, 2) chance to play for the Celtics, 3) chance to play for Doc. 1 and 3 are getting smaller each year, and 2 isn't enough of a reason.

I'd hate to go cheap on Rondo and have to fill in his spot with some garbage player. I'd rather pay slightly too much for Rondo.

No but like LngrrrR said it's better to overpay him than replace his spot with a garbage player.

No. If you are going to max out a point guard, it has to at least be one that is a great scorer as well as a great passer. Great passing means nothing when your shooters don't make their shots. For max money, I would want a complete player, and Rondo has a glaring weakness in his game. If Rondo could add a consistent jumper to his game he would be the best point guard in the league and easily worth a max deal. He is legit, and the Celtics should pay him, but not max money.

rondo is basically a jumper away from being one of the best players in the league. in the PO he is a gamer (and actually knocks them down sometimes), and he plays big minutes. he's not worth the max now, but if I were GM i'd definitely rather gamble on him living up to that contract than on draft magic or some "sweepstake" FA period.

remember he has carried an often injured and shallow roster through a lot of playoff runs, even if they were mostly ended by the opponent daring him to shoot. he has a great argument for best PG in the league, because his style of play is much sharper than other guys who pour points in but can't run an offense or defend their shadow.

Yes, he (and Pierce) make the things happen for the C's, typically dunks or wide open jumpers out of nowhere. He's also a great defensive player and a solid rebounder for a PG. He doesn't shot great, but he's not that bad either. Looks good driving, has offense too. He's very difficult to stop.

no one is offering him max imho, a 10m/yr contract should be enough to keep his service in boston. good bigs are generally getting overpaid in this league because such players are rather rare these days, but PGs are found everywhere in parks & streets, and some obscure/cheap PGs may turn out to be real good (linsanity, goran dragic etc...)

imo PGs are never max players, history proves they will most likely never lead you anywhere. The only PG that deserved a maxed out contract was Magic and he could cover multiple positions.
