Doesn't sound like the Clippers will bring him back. Last year, Martin said he was close to signing with the Spurs. If Diaw or Lorbek can't be signed, Martin makes some sense.

-He's still a plus defender. He moves his feet well, challenges shots and isn't bashful about going up for defensive boards. Where he could really help defensively is defending the pick-and-roll. He'd instantly become the best bigman on the team at defending those plays.

-Offensively he's pretty bad these days but he's at least capable of shooting from the perimeter. That trait is needed in S.A.'s offense.

-He has a mean streak and won't shrivel in the playoffs. He might not play well (2003 Finals, Game 6) but it won't be because he got scared.

    -He'll be cheap.

I'm not a huge Kenyon Martin fan but if the Spurs want a bigman defender, he's still well above average on that end.

hes still pretty mobile and did a pretty good job on parker when he got switched onto him during the reg season
also hit the mid range at a good clip in the playoffs
hed be a good pickup but hes probably out of the price range

He's good, but if he joins the Spurs only to be reminded of how many times Duncan owned him in the playoffs...

He also challenged the potential game winner Rudy Gay chucked after the Grizzlies choked away Game 1.

Is there a better bigman who fits the Spurs system that could be available for the minimum? I can't think of one. Martin would be a really good get at this point and would make it easier to move away from Blonnair.

Can guard most PFs and the bigger SFs. Notably challenged Rudy Gay's shot to preserve the Clippers' comeback win in Game 1.

It's also worth noting he's been Duncan's b*tch throughout his career. Nets got beaten in the Finals, Denver got beaten on the way to championships in 2005 and 2007, and the Spurs swept the Clippers...

Maybe he signs for the minimum, but not in San Antonio.

That's less than the vet minimum for KMart.

would be a great ending for the spurs free agency this year, but he will most likely sign with the Knicks. especially with Smith, Melo & Camby in NY.

I would be just fine with TD, Diaw, Splitter, Martin, and Blair as the 5th big on the front-line...

If we are looking for bigs, Martin would be good, and so would Brand. Amnesty Bonner for roster space, sign both to minimum contracts. Then we would have the 1st pick of the 1997, 1999 and 2000 drafts. Blair, Neal and Jackson would all be available for trade at the deadline in Feb.

Agreed. I'll especially enjoy him being on the team when Cuban is in the building!
I think his at ude would do us some good as well....

I would love K-Mart on the Spurs. Martin signing with the Spurs would mean one of Bonner/Blair is out.

I just don't see Martin wanting to play here. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Brand was amnestied so we have no chance at getting him.

yeah, martin will be good for defending PFs and small centers but that's about it. i wouldn't really expect anything from his offense or rebounding. it's better than nothing though and he can definitely get in the rotation, which means less bonner and blair.

Vet minimum for KMart is like $1.3.-1.4M. It's not much less than the LLE, and certainly not really a hardship.
