    Icky.

    Long story short:
Ron Paul supporters were booted from being delegates after they fairly defeated establishment chosen delegates. The RP supporters all pledged to support Romney as they were chosen to do in the first round of voting at the GOP convention.

    A bit more:
They were forced to sign written pledges even after promising and fully stating their intention to vote for Romney *in the first round*. (being free from that pledge if there is no clear winner in the first round, highly unlikely)

    ------------------------------------

Mass. Republicans oust Ron Paul delegates

Evan Kenney had just turned 18 and registered to vote for the first time when he campaigned to be an alternate delegate to the Republican National Convention. Lauding Ronald Reagan’s principles and blasting Keynesian economics at the Lynnfield caucus in April, the Wakefield High School senior beat out several well-known Massachusetts Republicans, including the party’s most recent nominee for governor, Charles D. Baker Jr.

But earlier this month, Kenney was one of 17 delegates and alternates disqualified by a Republican committee deciding who gets to represent Massachusetts Republicans at the national convention in Tampa. Kenney and others had failed to deliver in time an affidavit swearing, under the penalty of perjury, that they would support Mitt Romney’s nomination for president.

An affidavit is never mentioned in the Republican Party’s rules for selecting delegates and has never been required of delegates in the past, GOP critics say. Su ions are steep this year because Kenney and the others are supporters of Ron Paul, the libertarian candidate whose quixotic campaign for president culminated in an effort to take over state caucuses nationwide. The delegates must vote for Romney, based on his strong primary win in Massachusetts, but Paul’s supporters hope to use the convention to draw attention to his agenda, including auditing the Federal Reserve and requiring wars to be declared by Congress.

In Massachusetts, Paul’s Liberty Slate swept the Republican caucuses in April, stealing delegate spots that were expected to go to Romney’s friends and allies, whom he had selected. Massachusetts, a state dominated by Democrats and typically marginalized at national Republican events, could have an unusual share of the limelight at this year’s convention, since its former governor is the party’s expected presidential nominee.

Some libertarian-leaning delegates balked at the notion of signing legal affidavits pledging what they had committed verbally at the caucuses where they were elected. Many later submitted them, but not until after the deadline.

As a result, the committee disqualified them, winnowing the number of Liberty delegates and alternates to the convention from 35 to 19, said organizer Brad Wyatt. (One Liberty delegate was added due to the changes in the roster.)

“I’ve been rudely awakened to the realities of politics,” Kenney said. “I feel I’ve been cheated.”

To be fair, I saw similar types of ickyness at my own local Democratic caucus during the 2008 run up by an establishment head voting for Hillary.

The group was clearly strongly in favor of Obama, but the guy was using parlimentary bull to try and get the entire thing nullified. Had that happened none of the votes in our county would have counted as we would have had no delegates to go to the (pointless) state convention.

It didn't work, but it was peeving. The guy has since croaked. Good riddance.

Same thing happened up here during the Dem. Caucus. It was weird to watch it play out. The Hillary contingent got their asses kicked too.

If you think complete deregulation is the best form of government, why don't you move to Somalia? I hear there's plenty of guns and deregulation over there tbh.

How is it an oversimplification? Ron Paul thinks there should be absolutely no government regulation, no gun control, no public school or other government programs, etc......how is that different from Somalia's form of government?

Somalia has NO government, while Paul would obviously keep a government in place... believe it or not, the government would run just fine without having an expensive program for everything, controlling every aspect of our lives, and maintaining an out-of-control foreign policy, tbh...

I heard a couple days ago someone tell me they had read that the USG now occupies approximately 1/6th to 1/8th of the economy, obviously varying depending on how various stuff runs its course.

Not saying the government controls your life all tinfoil conspiracy style but it does have a profound effect tbh. One might argue an overly profound influence.

This, first and foremost... also, the social wedge issues that both parties cling to (gun rights, gay marriage, wiretapping, etc.) play a role...
