Notice that it's not an NBA game that counts, so TOSBryant's ego isn't in full-on chuck mode...
It was Kobe that closed out the 2008 Gold Medal game v. Spain. Visual proof:
Notice all them damn all stars deferring to the Black Mamba. Notice the easy breakaway buckets CP gets him - then imagine Nash doing the same. Notice the easy dunk Kobe gave D-12 with the easy assist. Notice that jumper and how open he is when playing with a real PG. Notice by his mere presence how many open looks his teammates got.
See what I did there ^ ? Discuss sons.![]()

Four years ago Kobe was in his prime. Now, well he's shooting43%
Wasn't it also Kobe who shot 4-13 against Angla
I remember that game and yeah, it looked like the rest of the team was floundering and Kobe did deliver in the clutch. It was an exciting end to the run. It will be interesting to see how much he can provide at an older age. I think, though, LeBron and Durant are now capable to shine in those moments if Kobe is no longer up to par.
Nobody can really argue that he's the main reason we didn't come home with silver, he was involved in almost every point after Spain came within 2. You have to respect how he took over the game, he not only scored but he also involved the entire team.
Too bad he doesn't play like this in the NBA![]()
lolwhat
He might play too selfish for our convenience, but it's that kind of play that helped land the Lakers five more rings.
Yeah, the guy gets his share of deserved scorn, but Venti is right--we have been spoiled to have had success under his career. Hate him or love him or somewhere in between, it will be a sad day when he is no longer no. 10 on the Olympic team and no. 24 on our beloved Lakers.
The main reason? To say he is the main reason, just because he finally got hot for one game is ridiculous, considering how he was nearly non-existent for multiple games prior to the gold medal game.
The main reason they won gold is because Wade and Lebron were workhorses game after game, along with Carmello scoring almost at will. When Kobe finally got a real hot hand, they keep feeding the hot hand, as any smart basketball player should do.
also, lol "Kang". What a skank hoe word to say. Are you a skank, LkrFan?
No real set 'main reason' to the team winning the gold because it actually took the whole team effort to win it. You had LeBron and Wade providing the offense while Odom and Kobe did all the other stuff and the ability of the team, as in any case when you have this many talented egos, to actually accept their roles as say--defensive stopper or rebounder is more what won the gold than the play of one or two players. It was just a combo of things and Kobe ended up being the one who ended it.
That's the main reason they got to the finals. The reason they won was because when Spain came within 2, Kobe took over the game. He didn't just score, he was involved in almost every key possession.
If Mavs - Heat went to game 7 and Mavs were up by just 2 after having a huge lead, would you say Dirk won them the game if he suddenly stepped up his game and orchestrated all the key possessions leading to a win?
Kobe is far from my favorite player, but the man deserves props for for playing what is probably one of the best 4th quarters in olympic basketball.
Sons this game was pure greatness by Kobe.Stop being such homers.![]()
I agree completely that he deserves great credit for an amazing 4th quarter.
I still disagree completely that he is the main reason the won gold. Had it been him running the show for the 7 games prior, and not Lebron, they almost certainly aren't even in the gold medal game.
Who would you give more credit to, somebody who carried the load along the way to the finals or somebody who got it done in the final game where the game was on the line?
Me, personally, would give the latter more of a nod. Sure he puts in less work, but he's the one who won that game and that game happened to be the most important one. And honestly, Spain was the only team that could compete with us after Manu was was hurt. We won all the other games by 20+ points I think, it wasn't really a big burden to carry team USA to the finals.
Now, if Lebron & crew did work carrying them past multiple playoff level teams then ofc he'd get most of the credit.
It's also mind-boggling how fat Marc Gasol was in 2008.
He still is.
That's stupid.
That would be like if a genius created an amazing invention, but someone else plugged battery power into the invention to make it begin working, and the latter person gets all the credit for everything.
How come Odom doesn't get credit for the 2010 World Championships, as the person who won Gold for the US? He basically did the exact same thing as Kobe. Durant did most of the work for the majority of the tourney, then suddenly in the 4th, Odom got hot and was making big play after big play. Does it mean Odom should get credit for getting the Gold?
Kobe got hot at a good time, and that was all. He was nearly non-existent for the duration of the olympics. He deserves credit for what he did, but Lebron, Wade and Carmello still deserve more for carrying the team through the majority of the olympics.
Not really. You are underestimating how fat Marc was in 2008.

From the looks of the game, the guy who invented the machine didn't have the arms to plug it in
I'll give you another analogy. It's like if two people were putting a tv into an apartment on the 2nd floor. One guy wheels the TV from the truck to the stairs in a trolly cart, but the other guy carries it up the flight of stairs. Who had the more important role?
Australia - Beat by 29 points
Argentina - Beat by 20
Spain - Beat by 10
Australia & Argentina somehow represents a huge burden
Fact: Spain was the ONLY team capable of competing with USA, everybody else had zero chance to beat us.
Also, Kobe carried the game vs Australia, for whatever that's worth
I wouldn't give Kobe all the acclaim, but to say he was non-existent in the 2008 Olympics is not accurate. He finished 3rd in scoring (Wade: 128, LeBron 124, and Kobe 120); logged the most minutes on the floor with 23.5 minutes; and had the most assists out of the SG. Granted, he shot more shots than anyone on the team (chucker moments) and he didn't shoot well (46%). But he did lead the team in scoring on two occasions (vs. Greece and Australia) It would be more fair to say it was a combo of a myriad of things that aided the U.S. to victory--well, that and the team is always stacked.
