Haven't checked, but there might have been a timeline in which they had to make a decision of fully guarantee his contract. If that is not the case - its a little odd since he could have been a nice filler in a trade.

Most likely? Byars had an offer from another team for more money (or guaranteed money) and asked to be released (might be overseas).

Most likely. The Spurs usually oblige in those situations, as recently as Novak during training camp last December. New York was offering guaranteed money.

I think we'll have 15 guys on our roster by the first day of training camp. Which is when??

The roster size limit during the offseason and the training camp is at 20 players. Spurs weren't close to that limit with 15 players under contract before the Byars waiving. The theory "Byars has been waived to free up a roster spot for another player" doesn't work.

This move has little connection with other moves Spurs could make. Byars has likely just asked to be waived to sign with another team. The only consequence you can draw from this waiving is that Spurs weren't close to a deal where Byars unguaranteed contract was needed to match salaries.

Not until the league deadline. I think it's in January or February. Fully non-guaranteed deals are like that.
