Spursfan with good memory should stay away from this thread, especially after Serge going like 15 for 15 against us in that one game in the WCF...
I think we all understand that while blocked shots are nice, generally it's not a good indicator that a guy is a solid defender. Ibaka is a prime example imho. I think this guy is a ty, ty man defender with horrific basketball IQ, but he blocks alot of shots so he gets overrated as some elite defender. This video nicely summarizes just how overrated Ibaka is.
He's guarding Battier, finds himself in the low post area with Perkins and then COMPLETELY FORGETS HIS ASSIGNMENT because all he's focused on now is anticipating a move by LeBron and blocking the shot. Nevermind that Durant is already doubling him, and Perkins is already down low to help. Thus Battier gets wide open for a 3.
The Thunder will rue the day they gave this guy big money, especially if it means they have to let Harden walk.

The sun shines on a dog's ass once in a while. Ibaka won't be able to have that kind of consistent success offensively for the long haul. And defensively his singular focus on blocking shots and doing else will kill the Thunder.
tbh, solid shot blocking has always been a premium in this league. See Big Ben who was arguably even worse offensively. I agree Serge is a low IQ player though, and he looks a lot better than he is by playing with the likes of Durant.
Ben Wallace did more than just block shots tho. He was also a solid man defender down low and a far better rebounder.
he's above average on defense according to the advanced stats, but nowhere near say dwight howard. wouldn't necessarily call him overrated overall as a player because he is reliable on offense to stretch the d and hit the open jumper and also a decent rebounder.
Serge Ibaka isn't exactly a bad player, but he can be easily beaten by guys who are fundamentally sound. And between Ibaka and Harden though, I'm letting Harden walk.
Leave that African dude alone...He's the only dude I know in World Basketball history to grab a monkey off the rim with his teeth during a dunk contest...he deserves his money

No way, I think Harden's role on the team is far more valuable than Ibaka's. What does he give them besides blocked shots and the hot midrange shot every blue moon?
I think that's why they went and got Perkins. Which gave them a double-whammy on defense since Perk works them out and Ibaka is behind for the block...
Harden is capable of being clutch for Oklahoma City, but the entire world witnessed how he collapsed during the NBA Finals. The guy is good, but he isn't worth a huge contract by any means. Ibaka, while having his own deficiencies, is a more important player for the Thunder than Harden.
Yeah but what does that matter if Ibaka just leaves his assignment and the guy gets a wide open shot? Not every team can execute like Miami so he'll have plenty of nights where he looks impressive, but in key situations I think Ibaka hurts his team defensively far more than he helps them.
Right into my office.
and what exactly did Ibaka do against Miami besides let Battier get wide open 3's and get curbstomped by Bosh?
Why would you try to sign Harden when the Lakers' books are going to be clear by 2014?
Buss is on a spending spree, told me to just buy up all the talent.
Harden >>> Ibaka
Ibaka getting DPOY votes is a joke. He's a poor post defender who is too weak to play long minutes at center ... despite the fact that just about every other power forward in the league nowadays can also play center.
His blocks are useful and he's good offensively when he's 3423234234-for-3423234234 on outside jumpers () but he'll never be an offensive force.
All that said, 4 years for ~$50 million wasn't a horrible overpay by the Thunder. That's pretty much the going rate for a young bigman with any plus skill.
Hes the best shot blocker in the game, and he probably alters a bunch more too. He can definitely be stupid even with the shots he blocks as a bunch of them are recovered by the opposing team....but if he ever realizes this or gets a decent coach to instill this in him he could be a defensive monster. Hes already a better offensive player than Big Ben ever was too.
Hi Mitch...it's Kool - I met you at a Tuxedo gala at the Beverly Wilshire hotel back in 2003...at any rate I was wondering if you could cut Duhon and Blake to make room for Barbosa and Kenyon Martin...please before X-Mas please...
Just Do It Mitch...Do It Mitchalso re-sign Fisher for good luck
Were you the one with the pink tux?
I have no dog in this fight..but I do have a question...Can you hoop? I was told by some Spur members on the board that your hoop game is pretty weak..Big time...what's the deal?
Also, Dr. Buss told me not to make any cuts until we see how the rotations play out. If Duhon doesn't play out, which I believe he will not, he will be sent to the Clippers for Chris Paul or to the Nets for Deron Williams.
so you remember me...the handsome guy with the pink Tux...surrounded by the ladies...that would be me
yep, he alters a TON of shots which was very apparent when we faced them in the first round this year. the downside is that he also gives up a lot of bonehead plays too..like the play in the OP. he's still young and at the end of the day it doesn't quite offset just how many shots he not only blocks but ALTERS. imo, he's an above average defensive player with potential to become elite (if he can just increase his defensive awareness and improve his positioning rather than go for the block every time, know WHEN to go for it and when to use positioning) but that's just potential he'll still need a great defensive coach to help him get there.
