Ann Romney: Mormon missions and U.S. military are ‘different ways of serving’
The wife of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney on Thursday said that her husband and sons had not joined the U.S. military but had found “different ways of serving” by going on religious missions in France, England, Australia and Chile as part of their obligation to the Mormon church.
During an interview on ABC’s The View, co-host Whoopi Goldberg asked Ann Romney how she would explain to the families of fallen soldiers why her husband and sons had not served their country.
“When I read about your husband, what I had read — and maybe you can correct this — is that the reason he didn’t serve in Vietnam was because it was against the religion,” Goldberg said.
“That’s not correct,” Ann Romney insisted.
“He was serving his mission, and my five
sons have also served missions. None served in the military, but I do have one son that feels that he’s giving back to his country in a significant way where he is now a doctor and he is taking care of veterans.”
“So, you know, we find different ways of serving,” she added. “And my husband and my five boys did serve missions, did not serve in the military.”

And Gecko said a few years ago that his boys, super patriots all, didn't sign up for Iraq or Afghanistan because serving Gecko's Pres campaign was serving, helping the country.![]()
i wouldn't let my kid fight for this ing country.
That is because your kid is a wuss....like you.
yeah, thats the reason.
The correct reply is that she has as many children serving in the military as Obama has family members serving in the military.
It's good to know we all agree on this topic.
A question of curiosity for everyone.
How many of your uncles have served in the military? All 8 of mine have! A few drafted, the rest voluntarily.
Barry's girls are too young to serve. They still have a chance later to get killed, maimed, mind destroyed for the oilcos and American imperialism. And his girls have enough money and security not to join the military like a lot of poor blacks and browns do for a job.
While I think it's true that people can serve their country in different ways, saying that they've "served missions" is a step too far. Unless you want to consider that Obama "served missions" by being a community organizer, or that the local Dunkin Donuts guy "served missions" by giving me the correct order.
Why are you limiting it to uncles? That's rather specific. My mother, aunt, an uncle, my father, my stepfather, and my stepgrandfather all served. (Mom, aunt, uncle in the Army, father, stepfather Air Force, stepgrandfather Coast Guard)
its also good to know she escaped the mental abuse.
There's a lot of poor whites in the military too.![]()
Well, being over a half century old, it wasn't common at all for the women of my aunts ages to serve.
Better yet. How many posters have served? I was in the army for 8 years.
11 years in the Army.
I'm the first american (and pretty recent too) in my side of the family, and too old to serve, but my grandfather (Italian) fought the Germans (with the French army) both in WWI and WWII. Both of his brothers did too (one dead, I was named after him. The other captured but eventually released, currently living in Paris, France). I don't know the service status on my wife's side.
13 Air Force... 7 more to go...
trolling for converts to a kookier than normal religion <> serving in the military
You finally get your citizenship?
My great-grandfather fought in WWII, the last legitimate war imo.
and it's not in any sense "serving your country" in any capacity
You even congratulated me...

There are plenty who serve in the military who are not "poor" or have nothing else to do but WANT to serve. I hate it when someone says "What a waste.." when someone decides to join the military.
I don't respect everyone that serves...and neither do most republicans..let's be real about this ...You don't like Obama because he's black, you don't want 's serving the military and yet you want me to honor your service...yeah right off..you and those like you...
I will respect who i want to respect and yours and most republicans I could give 2 s about their service...when you lying, racist ass mofo's start acting like respectable human beings and stop trying to play the upright / Christian card then maybe I'll reconsider...
In fact ALL republicans in congress decided obstruction / treason was a good policy for running the country the last 4 yrs and while they will NEVER admit to this in public any one with half a brain knows it's because the President *aka* Mr Count Choco-latte looks like the sky at night...
I just can't stand people like you that come on here and try to fake it for the sake of trying to look normal in most people's eyes..the intelligent amongst us know how you roll behind closed doors...and I'm sure Jesus would be proud....![]()
