I guess he will be waived soon.

D League teams can claim the d-league rights to up to 3 players that have been waived by their parent NBA team. Spurs signing Green is a way to have him in Austin easily and surely.

And it's a good signing for the Toros.

Witherspoon and Green should be 2 of the 3 players ending in the Toros through the "training camp cut" pipeline. The third one could be Sherron Collins but it's possible Spurs have found a better candidate that will sign too a contract shortly with Spurs.

Why wouldnt they sign him in the first place then?

D-League teams aren't allowed to sign players like that. Players sign a contract with the D-League and are then assigned to a team. There are events like a D-League draft to give a team to players that have signed a D-League contract. In this case, there is a rule that allows the Toros to claimed up to 3 players waived by Spurs during the training camp. These 3 players must have signed a D-League contract and can't have their D-League rights owned by another team.

They wanted to look at Curry and Brown, and in the end decided:

Green on Toros + extra roster spot > Curry or Brown on San Antonio roster

Brown 2.0 tbh. Still not sure why we waive curry though. Maybe spurs wanted to give him a chance to latch on to a team where he could probably stick. That or his defense was that bad.

This is ridiculous. It's past time the NBA have a full fledged MLB style minor league system, where every team owns their own D-League team and you're able to have up to, say, 20 players under contract and shuttle the ones on two-way contracts (as Green and Witherspoon would be) up and down as you see fit.

To my knowledge, the Spurs were the first team to attempt to utilize the Toros in this fashion, but they've got to jump through hoops to get the majority of the prospects (I'm not talking about the riff raff that's not even good enough to warrant an NBA camp invite) they want. Not that Green is going to be claimed, but still, they shouldn't have to put on this charade to attain his rights.

I thought Green sucked in summer league. Didn't seem to have a position or any real tangible skills.

That said, part of his issue was that he was out of shape. If he gets in shape and spends a year in Austin, he could be a decent training camp invitee next year.

Yep, this is Pops thinking nowadays and I never will get it. I know he won't make the team this year but come on man try one year atleast to get a big man next to Timmay. Timvp said he was not impressed in summer league with the guy, that tells me all I need to know about him.

I think the league is moving to smaller players that are more mobile and athletic rather than look for hard to find talented 7 and near-7 footers (unless said 7 footer is dominant a-la one in a generation players like Shaq or Dwight). With faster players on the court the game moves faster and NBA can see this as a way to help generate fans.

The Heat just won a championship with small ball, poor Pop probably wanted the distinction first. Anyway, if teams continue to win rings with small ball than this will likely be a continuing trend as these players are probably easier to find.

Yes, the Heat won a ring playing small ball...with a guy named LeBron James. Plus DWade. Plus, they play in the East, and didn't have to contend with a Howard/Gasol tandem to get to the Finals.

So actually, teams in the West have it rough - they have to be built to defeat either OKC or LA - or both. OKC is young and fast, while LA is big and slow. Currently the only way the Spurs beat OKC or LA would be if they shoot the lights out in a playoff series. That happened last year, right up until Game 3 of the OKC series. Question is, can we stay healthy and shoot even better this year.

Why would anyone assume he's being signed for anything but the Toros?
