I think barring injuries the following teams are locks for the playoffs: Spurs, Lakers, Clippers, SloppySeconds, Nuggets and Grizzlies. That leaves Dallas, Minnesota, Houston and Utah to slug it out for the final two spots. I think they did a fantastic job of putting together a decent ensemble on the fly after striking out on their FA targets. And because they have nobody tied up on long-term money, they can be players at the trade deadline to reel in a big fish if one becomes available. I think if they are close to .500 when Dirk gets back, they will grab one of the last three seeds.
The biggest obstacle to the Mavs making the playoffs isn't how "crappy" the roster is, but how deep the West is right now. Only Phoenix, Portland, Sacramento and Golden State are going to be terrible. I can totally see a repeat of 2008 when every playoff team had 50 wins and nobody had more than 58.
