Blazers rookies Damian Lillard and Meyers Leonard were part of NBA-TV's historic broadcast
Much of the interest nationally in Wednesday's game between the Trail Blazers and Lakers was probably driven by the new-look Lakers, but a byproduct was that a big audience got to see the historic debut by Portland point guard Damian Lillard.
The Blazers' season debut against the Lakers on Wednesday set the all-time record for any show in the history of NBA-TV, the network announced this morning.
The telecast drew an average of 868,000 viewers. The previous record was for the original airing of a do entary about the Dream Team, which drew 847,000 viewers. The previous high for any game broadcast on NBA-TV was for an April 27, 2011 playoff game between Memphis and San Antonio, with drew 835,000.
Lillard had 23 points and 11 assists to become the third player to NBA history to get at least 20 points and 10 assists in his first game.
The national numbers contrasted the rating in Los Angeles, where the game was the Lakers' first on Time Warner Cable SportsNet, which has picked up the team's broadcasts as part of a 20-year deal worth $60 million annually. In the L.A. market, the game had a rating of 2.82, which according to the Los Angeles Daily News, translates to 89,000 homes.
That's a big drop from last season, when Lakers games on Fox Sports West averaged a rating of 4.7 (263,000 homes), according to the Daily News. The reason is because Time Warner has not worked out agreements with several of the major carriers, including Dish Network and DirecTV, and is available only in 56 percent of homes in the market.
The situation is similar to the stalemate between Comcast and the satellite carriers to carry Comcast SportsNet Northwest, which will carry 60 Blazers games this season, including tonight's game at Oklahoma City. Earlier this week, Peter McLoughlin, CEO of Vulcan Sports and Entertainment, the Blazers' parent company, said he will try to work with Comcast to solve the stalemate. The Blazers' agreement with Comcast is in the sixth year of a 10-year, $120 million contract.
On Thursday, the Blazers announced they would make the 60 CSNNW games available via live streaming on their website for people who live in areas CSNNW is unavailable within the NBA-approved Trail Blazers territory across Oregon and Southwest Washington. The fee for all 60 games $99.99.
The Blazers also have one other broadcasting tweak this week. The radio broadcast of their 5 p.m. Saturday game at Houston will be on KPOJ (620-AM) to prevent overlap with the Oregon State-Arizona State football game, which starts at 7:30 p.m. on KEX (1190-AM/102.3-FM), the Blazers' usual radio home.

I disagree that the ratings weren't due to the Blazers. This is a sick world we live in and I think many people watched becuase they knew there was a high percentage to see an ankle getting broken or a knee getting shattered.
