Warms my heart to read that the evangelical population is "both declining and graying." Also great to hear that 1/5 of the population is not affiliated with a religion.
Sooner we can get god out of the political equation, the better off we'll be

Well, the article concedes one important fact: most Latinos are evangelical. Just two presidential elections ago the Hispanic vote was much more split (IIRC Bush got 44% of Latinos in '04). From what I've read most Hispanics consider 4 years Mobama the lesser of two evils. If the Republicans get serious on immigration reform (and stop pandering to ignorant border control bubbas) they could win back a big portion of Latinos, enough to swing elections, and they wouldn't have to change their religious message much. However conservative whites needs learn some Spanish if they wanna hold on to that vote.
"If the Republicans get serious on immigration reform"
If anything gets done to solve the immigration problem in the next 4 years, the Dems will get credit for it, but they need the Repugs to get out of the way.
The Latinos are part of the 99% so they'd have to be suckered like the rural bubbas to vote for Repugs.

And that's the thing. Hispanics are not bible-thumpers. They'll always prioritize immigration and perhaps a few other topics over religion. And no, touring a Cuban-american around isn't the way to "appeal" to them.
this, keep the gay marriage ing lose the immigration ing and you got a shot as a republican. And yes Rubio would be a horrible choice cause hispanics aren't blacks they won't vote on name, but heritage. I;ll vote whitey before cubn
I call bool on that one. The typical student counsel election in high school was typically a 3 way race:
white kid
white kid
white-washed hispanic kid who hung out with the white kids and grew up in a white area
The white washed hispanic kid always won in a landslide because his name was Jose so he captured the hispanic vote automatically, which was roughly 50% of our school's population.
Jews aren't any better though. If the Republican ticket had a VP with the name Goldstein they'd win Florida in a landslide.
what kind of hispanic was he .......................in Arizona. And what kind of hispanics voted for him?
There were about 2-3 white washed hispanic kids who basically won any stuco race they were in, all of them were Mexican but didn't speak a word of Spanish and were prolly 4th or 5th generation Americans at the least. The hispanic voting masses at my HS were also all Mexican tbh.

David Brooks has a good piece touching on this
Some Republicans argue that they can win over these rising groups with a better immigration policy. That’s necessary but insufficient. The real problem is economic values
"The real problem is economic values"
It obvious from the opening shots on the fiscal cliff battle is the Boner, etc are still sticking to Ryan's screw-the-99%-protect/enrich-the-1%.
The Dems are the party of the 99%, of which the Hispanics are mostly in the lower 40%, and should really ramp the class war, all out class war, against the Repugs and the 1% and above all the financial sector.
With the Banksters Great Depression havin receded further behind and the economy progressing, the Dems (w/o Hillary, of course) would win in '16 and '20, and perhaps take back the House.
That's what i'm talking about a mexican will vote for a mexican mostl likely without question but not a cuban
same is true for (white financial sector) 1%ers voting for other (white financial sector) 1%ers, like Bishop Gecko.
racial/tribal/ethnic/financial solidarity is some kind of surprise?
Seems like it's a problem to be ridiculed by right-wingers only when blacks, browns do it.
What??
70% of US Hispanics are Catholic.
Hispanic approval rating of Obama is about 75%. It was not a lesser of two evils vote.
The evangelical label has been throwing me for a loop, tbh. My point is that the Christian Right isn't the reason Republicans lost the Latino vote by a gigantic margin. Many Latinos are socially conservative but like ElNono said, have bigger things in mind.
Link? I know that about that margin voted for Obama, but I don't think Latinos bleed blue by any means. Just 8 years ago they were coming out in record numbers (then) for Republicans.
Edit: I found a job approval link on on ABC/ that put them about 66% approval right before the election, a bit lower than your number, but higher than I expected, admittedly. We'll see how things shape up these next four years. In mid 2011 Hispanic approval was in the 40's and 50's for Obama while at the beginning of his term they were in the 80's so I think the ratings are fairly dynamic in any case.

I'm not saying that Hispanics only vote for Democrat I'm just saying that this wasn't a lesser of two evils vote. It seems they are actually fairly satisfied with Obama. They certainly are dynamic, however.
We should never vote for anyone who professes a belief in the supernatural. They are not of sound mind. How could they be?
When your guy believes God lives on a planet named Kolob, you probably don't want to make religion an issue.
