New Orleans is expected to change their name to the Pelicans possibly by next season. The Bobcats might become the Hornets again.
Maybe the NBA should have saved their intervention for this name change. The pelicans are in ,my opinion, the worst nickname in any of sport (The Dolphins are off the hook).
At least they got Anthony Davis...but at what cost.
Personally cant wait for BR's response.![]()
So your saying it's worst than Banana Slugs?
New Orleans should pe ion to get "Jazz" back, tbh.
New Orleans Pelicans is nowhere near as bad as Houston Texans or even Toronto Raptors.
Its got to be a joke. New Orleans Pelicans.
I hear the new owner owns the rights to the Pelicans name, but did he ever wonder why it was available for sale in the first place?
Depends on the logo TBH:

Texans, Raptors, Mighty Ducks much worse. I mean the Angels works only because LA is the city of angels except the Angels do not play in LA now and the name sucks.
Mighty DUCKS YES! Texans is bad but not quite. Raptors is bad as well lol! Pelicans is just horrible and I feel bad for the City because the team sucks and will for a while and now they have to deal with that name lol. Poor guys.
BTW Charlotte Bobcats is a bad name too IMO.
Most of you are too young to remember the old Southern Association(not southern league) in minor league baseball. They were the New Orleans Pelicans. Old man Benson owns the rights to the name. As for it being bad name, Why? Because you dont like it? To me the dumbest name in the Nba belongs to the New York Sterns, opps, Toronto Raptors.
Utah has offered, in the past, to sell the rights to the name back to New Orleans. They've never been willing to spend the money.
I wonder if Charlotte really was the one that pushed to get "Hornets" back. They've wanted it for a long time. Charlotte actually has a long history with the name "Hornets". During the revolutionary war, British General Cornwallis was having trouble controlling the city and, in 1780, complained that the city was a "veritable hornet's nest of rebellion." The name stuck, and Charlotte has long held the proud nickname of "The Hornet's Nest". I've actually been very annoyed with New Orleans for holding onto the name as long as they have. Thats proud history for North Carolina, and I hate to to take it from them - especially to such a disreputable location as NOLA.
And this is Spurs related because...?
lmao that second pic
Absolutely! Utah can be Polygamists or something....
TBH it's no more stupid than lakers, knickerboxers, seventy-sixers or spurs for that matter, we're just more used to those. It's all about merchandising anyway.
Pelicans!?
Should be the New Orleans Hurricanes... too soon?![]()
Good on you for pointing out that Lakers, Knicks and 76ers are the worst names. But wtf is wrong with Spurs?
I don't know, it's just kind of wierd and lame when you think about it, feels like San Antonio Socks or something...
New Orleans Looters![]()
Uh-oh, that may be a step too far...![]()
Come on you old bas , are you serious? If Charlotte renames themselves the Hornets and readapts the original colors (without the royal fascist yellow) and you change your colors to a wicked crazy and stupid gold, red, and blue: you are completely off the hook old man. However, if Charlotte is forced to keep their oompa loompa orange and frostbite blue coloration, as sure as I sit here on my honor as a gentleman, I will find you and bring you to with me. If your colors go the San Jose Sharks leeway and your insignia resembles the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, then I will be a monkey's uncle if I don't starve you for a week and smoke an armadilla by ya then run you over with a steamroller somewhere near Butt , Texas.I can hardly wait.
As velik_m said, once people will get used to it over the years, nobody will have an issue about it. Pelican sounds like a fine name with strong local roots.
And nobody will call them the Pelicans. One way or another, people will shorten it. There isn't a single NBA team with a name that is 3 or more syllables long that hasn't been shorten (knickerbockers -> knicks, seventy-sixers -> sixers, cavaliers -> cavs, mavericks -> mavs, timberwolves -> wolves, trailblazers -> blazers). Does "pels" sound fine?

Good point. So the New Orleans Pels or the New Orleans Cans here we come!
Should have a nod to the LA enslavery/dependence on the oil industry
