What difference does that make. So we get the slippery slope and grandfathering arguments that are the same we have heard before.
HERE is an article from SA talking about Australia's 1996 semiauto and pump action ban. I agree that banning 'assault weapons' gives gun manufacturers all manner of loopholes but 'semi-automatic' and 'pump action' cuts through all the bull . Breech-load, bolt action and double action pistols all remained legal.
Also keep in mind that Australia is just as much 'rugged outdoors' and 'culturally ingrained' as the US. Anyway here is the salient part of the article:
The legislation banned semi-automatic and pump-action rifles and shotguns, which were purchased back from civilian owners, removing more than 600,000 guns from Australia’s adult population of 12 million. There were 13 gun massacres (the killing of four or more) in the 18 years before the 1996 National Firearms Agreement and none afterward. The law also reduced substantially homicides and suicides using firearms.
So the gun fetishists, red-state bubbas, NRA assholes conclude and agitate for absolutely nothing to be done about the current insanity, except sell even more guns and remove all regulations on guns of all types.
