by Source staff
June 24, 2005 -- In a press release, Gov. Charles W. Turnbull has declared Friday, June 24 to be Tim Duncan and San Antonio Spurs Day in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The governor's action is in honor of the Spurs' third NBA le in seven years and Virgin Islander Duncan being named the MVP in the just-completed seven-game NBA Finals.
"We share the great pride and joy of seeing one of our own attain such a coveted international status in the sports world," said Turnbull.
"His success has not only brought significant attention to the caliber of athlete that he is but also on the Virgin Islands from which he originates. Tim Duncan has repeatedly displayed his class and leadership ability throughout his professional career, and he is an outstanding example for all Virgin Islanders," Turnbull added.
Duncan is the fourth player in NBA history to be named MVP of the championship tournament three times.
The V.I. Legislature, on behalf of the people of the Virgin Islands, has recognized his contributions by naming the gymnasium at the St. Croix Educational Complex in his honor.
