Tbh, I don't think this was a classic "rest" game for Pop. Yes, it's four games in five nights but the Spurs have had a relatively easy schedule and the minutes have been reasonable for everyone. It's not like Pop always used to "rest" when it was four games in five nights.

That Portland game was a different story but this I didn't think the Knicks game was one Pop would historically sit the Big 3. Obviously, hindsight tells us that it would have been a good idea ... but that's a different conversation.

That would be pointless tbh. Pop's smart enough to know that they prob aren't winning @ POR, @ DEN, or @ NY on the 2nd night of b2bs, let alone the 4th game in 5 nights. Pre-250k Pop rests them without much thought. Post-250k Pop plays them unnecessary minutes and heightens the risk of a season ending injury.

I'd figure you put the Spurs' chances to win this game were about 25% before tipoff. Pop probably thought the same so I'm not sure what the point was in risking it.

Pop is the best coach in the league at protecting his players' health. I think he underestimated how fatigued they were, and probably underestimated the effort the Knicks would come out with a little bit as well.

Doubtful Stern had much to do with it.
